The race, run by the Peel Cycling Club, attracted a very enthusiastic field for the 45km Handicap event. Ken Portman and Ruth Haslam were first away with Jack Iveson, Joe Cox and Rob Davis also among the front markers. Further back Richard Le Tessier and Phil Edwards were away followed by Steve Ware and Alan Clark another three minutes behind. Diesel, off scratch, with Time Trial specialist Mark Roberts were smartly into action and pumping along to first pull back Paul Slocombe and Russell Fryer then Clark. Ware was doing it alone until he gathered in Edwards and Le Tessier to be in the hunt with two laps remaining. The early markers were now a group of seven riders sharing the workload but in the end were no match for Diesels group pulling back time ever so smartly in the latter stages. On the final lap and one kilometre from the line 13 riders had come together with Roberts and Slocombe doing a mountain of work in the chase, the front markers were stunned to be caught. With the pace on in the final 400 metres, the field began to break up with Diesel heading for line one bike length ahead of Roberts, second and Clark hanging on for third, Jack Iveson found his legs to finish fourth with Joe Cox fifth. Shoena Clark held on in the final stages to finish in the top ten.
