Carnegie Caulfield Cycling Club

Glenvale Crescent, Melbourne, January 9, 2005

By Zack Alexakos

With regular race director Doug Moody assisting Mal Sawford in managing the Carnegie Caulfield/Billa Bridge team in the Jayco Bay Classic, racing at Glenvale Crescent was in the more than capable hands of Lorraine Collings and Leanne Sutton. Special mention also to the efforts of Doug Reith and Trish Judd who helped things run so smoothly Doug and Mal may go missing a lot more often!

A Grade

With only 13 riders in the field one would have thought the race might be tame, but it proved to be the most aggressive race of the day, with riders constantly attacking and breaking from the bunch. Doug Garley (Terry Hammond Cycles) was especially active early during the race, pulling away from the bunch twice in 20 minutes and putting in a 50 metre break on the second attempted break away. Geordan Murray (Lloyd Morgan), Matt Shea (Naughty Boy) and Matt Chessum (Fitzroy Cycles) then took over and attacked at the 20 minute mark of the race. Dave Buntin (Team Alex), Warren Knevitt (O'Mara Cycles) and Steve Hickey tried to join them, but riders Jamie Kelly (THC) and Hugh Watson were able to pull the bunch back to the main breaks. Knevitt then attacked and stayed away from the bunch for several laps before being brought back to the bunch by an attack by David Sturt. Several laps later and with the attacks coming thick and fast A Grade was in 3 groups. Eventually a single bunch reformed, but by then it had claimed a few casualties. At the 40 minute mark Garley and Buntin were away with Chessum unsuccessfully trying to bridge. There was a break of about 50 metres for several laps with Murray, Danny Kah and Pete Knight driving the main bunch in an attempt to close the break. The break held on for nearly fifteen minutes until they were brought back to the bunch with a vicious attack from Sturt and Chessum from the main field. With the bunch together again, Kah, Chessum, Shea and Kelly organised a well planned attack, making it 30 metres clear before multiple attacks from the bunch brought it all back together again for what became the fifth sprint royale for the day. Track specialist Warren Knevitt took the honours, from Kelly, Sturt and Watson.

B Grade

'Fast' Eddie Perez and Carl Brewer set the pace early, leading the bunch before Brewer decided to go it alone. Chris Garrard, Frank Reardon, Marcus Prentice and Wayne Evans then attacked, with Garrard pulling away a lap later. Next lap Cam Rotter, Glen Wright and Brewer combined but were pulled back after several laps. Five minutes later, and with the bunch well rested and coasting, Jim Gallagher (Team Alex), Grant Edmonds and Boon Chia attacked but slowed as they approached to overtake A grade. The break was reeled in by the bunch, before allowing A grade to pull away at high speed. Brett Morton, Wright and Brewer attempted an attack at the 28 minute mark of the race. They were brought back a lap later when regular Canadian visitor Blair Purvis decided to chance his luck in a sole breakaway, managing a fifty metre gap to the bunch before Gallagher put in a strong attack from the bunch that reeled him in. At the 31 minute mark Richard Reynolds had opened a lead of one hundred metres, but Morton and Wright put an end to it. Daniel Young attacked at the 38 minute mark but was soon caught with Garrard, Reynolds and Purvis attacking a lap later with no success. A crash in the closing stages saw lots of skin lost (Dennis Bowen-Day won't be sitting down for a while!) but fortunately nothing was broken - riders would be best advised to avoid moist gutters as the grip level there is usually low and doesn't mix well with road tyres. At the 50 minute mark Morton, Purvis and Wright attacked, followed closely by Steve Morrow, Edmonds and Colin Morris. Eventually Vince Condello, Reynolds and Chia were able to maintain a reasonable lead of 50 metres until they were caught five minutes later during the final lap. Yet another bunch sprint ensued, which resulted in Dale Woonton taking the win, from Garrard, Purvis and Doug Reynolds.

C Grade

For twenty minutes the C grade bunch set a reasonable pace until Adam Mulford broke from the pack. A few laps later Scott McGee, George Greenall and Michael Thomas joined him but all were brought back by the bunch a lap later. Mulford immediately went on the attack again, with Jason Gelsi, Trent Brown, Joel Rogers, Colin Aitken and Dean Stewart leading the main bunch. They were able to bring Mulford back but were soon attacked by riders Spiros Mouzakis and Nick Groves. With the break looking good Stewart, Wayne Andrew, Stuart 'the Hippy' Birnie and Thomas bridged and this lasted for five minutes before the bunch realised the danger and brought them back. An exciting final ten minutes ensued with John Groves, Stuart Jacobsen and Mulford attacking in what seemed to be the break of the day. Working well together the break was clear by half the length of the straight before the main bunch, powered by Aitken, was able to slowly bring them back with one lap to go. The third field sprint of the morning followed with Brown fastest, from Andrew and young Tom Gallagher (Inexa). The women were well down the back of the field for most of the race but Monique Hanley and Melissa Kah sprinted into first and second respectively.

D Grade

After taking the top two places last week, the women set the pace for most of the race with the men hanging on. Andrea Bishop displayed some pace early on, attacking and eventually breaking away with Michelle Murrell half way through the race. A lap later the men realised they were in trouble and combined to reel in the break. With the bunch back together Malcolm Powell and Andrew Donohue led the bunch for a lap. Five minutes later Grant Boydell, Jordan Griffiths and Andy Cameron made a break. The women were again showing up the men although two laps later they too were reeled in by the bunch. Kevin Delaney and Griffiths decided to test the bunch a few minutes later with Griffiths attacking and breaking from the main bunch with Boydell. Their break lasted for several laps before the main bunch regained contact In the bunch sprint number Donohue proved quickest, ahead of Powell, Cameron and Andrew Rose. In the women's result, Bishop turned the tables on last week's winner Murrell.

E Grade

All riders finished the race including lapped riders. A fast sprint royale from the bunch ensued in the final straight, with Aaron Eynaud first, Dale Reith second, Sally Beveridge third and Jake Pedley fourth. There was little change in the $7000 Inexa - Team Alex Summer Series standings, with most of the leaders racing the Bay Classic, leaving Tom Walker out in front, and Gemma Goyne the best of the Women. Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue every Tuesday night with Twilight Racing at Sandown starting at 6.30pm for all grades, with access to the circuit via Sandown Road from 6pm. Sunday mornings are at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80B2). C, D and E Grades start at 9am, while A and B Grade ride at 10am. All holders of 2005 Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out a day license for $20.. For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth conducts novice racing clinics at Glenvale Crescent.
