Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Southern Veterans Cycling ClubOctober 10, 2004Spence wins Bicycle Express OpenChris Spence took his second victory for the year in Division One of the Bicycle Express Open at Mount Compass this weekend in windy and hot conditions over a demanding course. Spence was part of a group made up of riders from the 10 and 12 minute starters who maintained a brisk and demanding pace to hold off the chasing scratch. All the places in division one came from this group. Spence has had four victories with the club since he started riding in 2002 and now has three major results for the year. Second place went to State Time Trial Champion (age category three) and VLCC rider Mick Tagell for his first result with the Southern Vets sponsored open event this year. The remaining places despite the hilly course all went to VLCC regulars. Steve Johns finished third to take his second open result for the year after a fourth place in the TASC Strathalbyn two stage event in September. New rider Steve Buck took fourth with Brian Martin taking fifth to add to his impressive tally of four victories since 2000 with the club in Open events. Fastest time in Division one went to Herb Valley sponsored scratch rider John Watters who worked impressively with the scratch team but could not make up the 10 minutes in the windy conditions. In Division two Barry Timmins took his first win for the year after a kind mark (22 minutes) enabled him to cross the line ahead of the chasing pack. Timmins has three results for the year and this was his seventh victory since joining the Southern Vets in 2000. The sprint for the line for second was taken by VLCC rider Barry Watt for his first ever result with the Southern Vets. As with division One the VLCC club did very well taking third and fifth. Mike Southern took his first result to claim third and Robert De Ross took fifth for his third result with the Southern Vets and his first since 2000. Kent Dredge flew the flag for the Southern Vets taking a well earned fourth place for his third result this year. Fastest time went to scratch rider David Cox.
