Port Fairy Cycling Club

March 6, 2004

The rain cleared on Saturday afternoon for the Port Fairy Cycling Club race. Held over the usual 31km out and back course. However a strong southwesterly wind prevailed. This didn't deter the nineteen keen cyclists from starting.

With several regulars missing due to other long weekend activities, the handicapper's job was made difficult by lack of middle and out makers. The eight man scratch bunch had the numbers to roll though the field for the second time in as many weeks.

The three out makers, Hilda Cook, Dennis Lemke and Daryl P Rae made the most of a strong tail wind out to the turn. However having to battle against the odds on the return trip. Staying a head of the chasing field was always going to be a difficult task. Jade Frankel led his co-markers as they swallowed up all those in front.

In the battle for line honours Mark Winnen took his chances by 'jumping' from the pack first. Only to be over taken by a very fast finishing Jade Frankel in the last few meters to the line.

There are few cyclists in the district who can match the tactical skills of both Mark and Jade when it comes to the final sprint. On their day either can produce a superior finish. Both have enjoyed countless victories over the years, simply because of their ability in the final meters of a race. It looks like 2004 is going to be the year of strong scratch men, so we can look forward many great finishes like Saturday's race.

The final placings were Jade Frankel (scr) 1st & Fastest time (45.36), Mark Winnen (scr) 2nd, Wayne Collins (scr) 3rd.

Local cyclists are looking forward to a full schedule for the month of March. Many competitive and social cyclists will join together for the popular Murray to Moyne Charity Ride, whilst racing cyclists not involved in the Murray to Moyne, are training hard for the upcoming Tour of Southern Grampians, both events are held on the 27th and 28th of March.

The Tour, being hosted by the Coburg Cycling Club, consist of three stages totaling approximately 200 kilometres of racing. It is an absolute bonus for local cyclists to be able to compete against Victoria's best in our own back yard. Any interested cyclists should hurry to get their names in, entries forms are available by visiting www.coburgcycling.com or by emailing paul@coburgcycling.com

The club also welcomed back president Fiona Lee. Who has spent the last four weeks in St John of God Hospital in Geelong. We wish Fiona well in her recovery. We would also like to thank those who helped out each morning during the Folk Festival. By getting out of bed early and helping with the clean up in the arena's 'wet area'. Without such fundraising activities we would not be able to put on our great racing program, which is enjoyed by so many. The next club race will be on Saturday 13th of March at 2.00pm. Entries can be forwarded by SMS to 0438 614 557.
