Floramo a Wizzer and Busch a Burglar

Mildura-Coomealla CC (www.m-ccc.com.au) conducted its Special Trophies Day on July 10 at the Club's "Riverside" circuit. The Bill "Wizzer" White Cup is raced by Open age riders and juniors and the "Ned Kelly" is for Vets (o/35yrs). The Wizzer this year was 70kms and dragged 9 riders whilst the burglars trophy was a 60km affair and hooked 22 cyclists.

Nathan Floramo raced his way to an emphatic win by outsmarting his challengers in the finishing straight, rushing to the line with apparent energy to spare. Dion Bassi-Anstee only needed to finish the race in this field to earn the honour of back to back wins for the junior "Wizzer" White winner. This he did and finished in front of his older charges (yes, they let him go !). Dion's ride was good enough to stay with the strength of Errol Schmidt and Rob McNally for the entire journey. Scott Giles on the other hand once again stood in the path of a black cat and wasn't able to finish the race.

In the Vets race, the biggest field of the day lined up, all 22 riders, commenced with a neutral lap to allow the limit riders (from regular handicap events) to find their legs before the pace quickens. Big Tom Athorn had a few problems early with the bigger field and the change of pace, a plea to slow down was heeded but not for long. At the commencement of lap 2 it was Peter Winton and Peter Doody out front giving the field a wake up call. With Ian Brade and Mark Busch also in the bunch most regular riders were not too enthused to go to the front and chance fitness levels. Consequently this pair of A graders controlled the race to suit themselves for the most part.

Doody sharpened up the field on several occasions with sustained bursts along with the regular slingshots of he who is affectionately known in the Club as "The Doctor". Busch and Brade tested the resolve of the bunch with tandem attacks but each was not sustained long enough to separate riders with enough distance to cause aching heart muscles and lactic pain in the legs.

In the end it was Rob Akkermans taking the race right up to Mark Busch with Ian Brade some metres back in third. Doody and Winton followed close together with the bulk of the field spread out behind Jack Lokan.

Next weeks race is at the Merbein cemetery circuit. A 64km handicap (8 laps). Riders are asked to make sure they nominate early in the week and to be at the sign-on by 1:15pm. Race start is 1:30pm sharp.
