The second major race of the Cycling Queensland Road Racing season took place Sunday, under crisp blue autumn skies at the Brookwater Estate 20kms south of Brisbane. 70 Elite riders lined up for 120kms of undulating terrain in what has become one of the premier events on the calendar. The pace was furious from the beginning, with riders from Flight Centre, Healthworks, Velo and Team Zipp initiating leg snapping sequences of attacks that caused the field to dimish in size over the first 70kms. At the 80km point, a major move containing 9 riders broke clear of the field. Crucially, one of the pre race favourites, Jared Poad (velo), made the move, while another favourite, David Kemp (QAS) was left behind in the bunch. This set the way for a ferocious finale, as the break tried desperately to stay clear of the chasing field. In the sprint, Tony Mann (Healthworks) managed to edge ahead of Stu Cowin (Merida), with Matt Newlands (Healthworks) grabbing the third spot on the podium. Special thanks to Cycling Queensland and Brookwater for puttting on a magnificent event, with a distinctly Euro/ Australian flavour. The day was organised exceptionally, with a corporate event held by Marcel of MB coaching giving first timers the opportunity to test out the course, and the facilities at Brookwater Golf Club - including ample shading under the marquee, and gourmet food and beverage- being made available to all riders.
