This was a big weekend of racing for the Southern Cross Cycling Club with over 130 of the State's best junior riders converging on Waratah Park Sutherland to race for Metropolitan and Country Medals as well as over $2,500.00 worth of prize money. The riding was always going to be fast and furious and yes no one was disappointed. Saturday morning saw the Metropolitan Championships being run so as to give the country competitors some time to travel and then prepare themselves before racing. The conditions were absolutely perfect, with clear blue skies, temperatures nudging a very warm and balmy 23 degrees with just a hint of a breeze flowing nicely up the finishing straight. This was evident by the sponsors flags and banners of Visy Board and David Short Cycles, softly swaying over the finish line. Just right for the riders as this would most certainly assist with some of the sprint finishes. For the Metro competitors, it was the Under 9's kicking off the proceedings at 8.00 am. Most of the age divisions were well represented as far as numbers were concerned and the racing was very much of a high standard. Some of the stand out performances across the morning would include young Tom Matthews who is very new to the sport of cycling giving another outstanding performance. Another round of the "never-ending tussle" between Philip Arias and Scott Harding in the Under 11's played out in front of the spectators eyes. These 2 boys have gone head to head for the last 4 years and always put on a good show for the crowd. Leah Guillan also performed exceptionally well against the boys in the under 11's. Need I say that as the age division increased, so did the level and ferocity of the racing. Bede Kelly and Jack Bennett were both representing Southern Cross in the 13's and rode as hard as they physically could, giving their race 200%. The Country Championships was just as exciting and entertaining as the mornings racing. These juniors really know how to race hard and hard they raced. There were many stand out performances and perhaps too many to mention. Sundays racing was an "all in" affair with the Country riders racing against the Metropolitan riders. Today was to be a little different, as they were not only competing for money and prizes, however the pride of the Country and Metropolitan area's was up for grabs. Points would be awarded for the results in each race and a final tally would see who would be the victor for the weekend, The Country or The Metropolitan Riders? The format for Sunday was all divisions would race a Criterium and then back up a little later for a Road race, all within their respective age divisions.
