32nd Joe Martin Stage Race - NEFayetteville, Arkansas, USA, May 7-10, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - May 8: Road Race, 110/64 milesHaedo captures stage win; Sutherland moves into the overall leadBy Kirsten Robbins Sebastian Haedo (Colavita-Sutter Home) won stage two of the Joe Martin Stage Race by doing what he does best...sprint. The Argentinean speedster blast to the finish line ahead of two-time event winner Rory Sutherland (OUCH p/b Maxxis) and Sean Milne (Team Type 1). "This is a good win, toward the end it was crazy because everyone was at the front," Haedo recapped the lengthy uphill drag to the finish line. "I had four of my teammates help me get to the front through the last chicane in order to stay in good position. The leader, Ben Jacques-Maynes went first into the last corner and with my teammates Davide [Frattini] then me and Sutherland was behind me. Sutherland jumped first so I got on his wheel. I came around him in the last hundred metres." Coming into the finish, Bissell set up their race leader Jacques-Maynes in good position for a field sprint where time bonuses were key to holding the overall lead. The front of the peloton filled up with a mixture of riders looking for time and others looking for a stage win. Sutherland captured enough time bonus points on the line to move into a 9-second lead in the overall ahead of Jacques-Maynes (Bissell). Bissell holds a strong presence in the overall standings with Jeremy Vennell sitting in third. "The stage went well and I think Bissell rode did a good job today in defence of the lead," said Sutherland. "Team OUCH rode very well into the finish. I had [Andrew] Pinfold and [Karl] Menzie drop me where I needed to be, in a good position. We are looking forward to the next few days defending the lead that is very important to us. But there are a lot of strong riders sitting closely behind us." The men buried themselves over 5,400 feet of climbing stretched over a 179 kilometres. The toughest climb is located mid-race at a 3% grade over 16-kilometres. The finishing straight has a 6% uphill grade over the last 350 meters. Bissell had their hands full holding the peloton at bay in the early part of the race. Mid-race they were content to see a pair of riders, with no threat to the GC, go up the road. Alejandro Borrajo (Colavita-Sutter Home) and Andrew Talansky (Amore & Vita-McDonald) found an opportunity to break away from the peloton 65-kilometres into the stage. The pair worked well together and gained a hefty eight-minute margin on the field. "I think the field kind of sat up and expected Bissell to chase," Haedo said. "They went to the front just before the start of the climb and that really brought the gap down." Talansky fell off pace before the start of the stage's decisive 16-kilometre climb. Borrajo went on alone in an effort to reach the top of the climb before Bissell reeled him in. The Argentinean continued for an additional 35 kilometres alone, for a break away that totalled nearly 70-kilometres. Bissell used their strengths on the climb to bring back the bulk of the time. They made contact with Borrajo with 20-kilometres to the finish line. "We didn't just want the stage win today," said Colavita-Sutter Home directeur, Sebastian Alexandre. "We wanted to try to move one of our riders up in the classification. It didn't work but we tried. In the end we had Haedo for the field sprint." Keisanowski wins bunch sprint; Powers holds leadJoanne Keisanowski (TIBCO) out-kicked America's top sprinter Laura van Gilder (Mellow Mushroom) to take Joe Martin's stage two victory in downtown Fayetteville. After leading out her teammate for the win, Katharine Carroll hung on for third place. "It was good, we tried to be aggressive," said Carroll, defending champion of the Joe Martin Stage Race. "About two-kilometres to go my TIBCO teammates were all together at the front. We had good position going over the rollers but it was a really long sprint. I jumped and luckily Jo caught her second wind and won because I blew-up." With relatively small changes to the general classification, Alison Powers (Team Type 1) continues to lead the overall ahead of Webcor-Builder climbers Katheryn Mattis and Erinne Willock. Some 40 women survived the climb and barrelled their way into the twist and turns that made for an exciting sprint finish. TIBCO stacked the front of main bunch with sprinters like van Gilder, Gina Grain and Nikki Butterfield (Webcor Builders), Jen McRae (Team Type 1) behind looking for a stage win. Likewise, GC contenders made up the bulk of the bunch sprint like Powers, LaSasso, Bausch and Kristin Sanders (VAC) all in the hunt for time bonuses. The women raced over on shorter version of the men's circuit. They contested more than 3500 feet of climbing over a 110 kilometres point-to-point road race. TIBCO attempted to isolate leader, Powers early on when a small breakaway of seven riders headed up the road. The break gained a mere 15 seconds and was reabsorbed into the field before the base of the decisive 16-kilometre ascent. Erinne Willock (Webcor-Builders), Kristin LaSasso (Mellow Mushroom) and Dotsie Bausch (Jazz Apple) escaped the field mid-way up the climb. Willock and LaSasso's high placing in the overall posed a treat to Powers GC lead, forcing her to chase. "There was a lot of attacking going into the climb," van Gilder said. "A few riders got away and that pt Powers in a tough position. I think the pace that was set on the climb really caused the main field to separate by the end." Powers and her Team Type 1 teammates did the bulk of the chasing and accepted the much needed help from single TIBCO and Value Act Capital riders, team interested in a field sprint and had no representation in the break away. The trio was reeled in on the long stretch back into town. "LaSasso is riding so strong and she is just nipping at the heels for a podium here," said van Gilder regarding her newly formed Mellow Mushrooms team. "That would be fabulous to see her achieve that. We are also looking for stage win as well. I think we have a lot of goals for a small team."
