57th FBD Insurance Rás - 2.2Ireland, May 18-25, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - May 20: Cahirciveen – Killorglin, 178 kmRichardson seizes yellow as Walker wins stageBy Shane Stokes A perfect coup. Using team tactics to perfection, the Rapha Condor team of Simon Richardson wrested the race lead off the shoulders of Ian Wilkinson (Team Halfords Bike Hut) on today's fourth stage of the FBD Insurance Rás into Killorglin. The British squad used the most of what former pro John Herety said is the strongest team he's ever managed, turning the screw on Wilkinson, getting away from him on the first category climb of the Conor Pass, and placing all five of its riders in the 38-man group which drove on to the finish. Riding a ferocious team time trial, the squad reached the finish three minutes and 53 seconds ahead, wiping out the 19-second advantage Wilkinson had over his closest rival in Cahirciveen this morning. The result was a yellow jersey for Richardson, one year after his Rás debut where he won a stage and wore yellow for a day. "Things worked out perfectly for us," Richardson said afterwards. "I was really looking forward to the climb but I was being held back [by team-manager John Herety]. My teammate Darren Lapthorne had attacked and I didn't want to bridge up to him too early. But then towards the top I could see that Wilko [Wilkinson] was really suffering and it was great for me, I got to clip away. My team then drove it all the way to the finish." First to the line in Killorglin was the 20-year-old Australian Nicholas Walker (Cinelli-Down Under), who proved quickest in the uphill gallop. He beat Jan Barta (ARBÖ-KTM-Junkers), points leader Russell Downing (Candi TV-Pinarello RT), Jaco Venter (Trek-Marco Polo Cycling Team) and Nico Eeckhout (An Post-Sean Kelly Team). Sixth place went to the talented 18-year-old Sam Bennett (Dan Morrissey), who comes from the same hometown of Carrick on Suir as Sean Kelly. Last year he won the European junior points race championship. Walker was very happy with his stage victory in Killorglin. "It is the first win I have in a big race," he said. "I was one of the last in my group going over the top of the Conor Pass but my teammate Bert Roesems did a lot of work to get me back up with the leaders. He kept me out of the wind for 50 or 60 kilometres and set me up for the sprint. "He dragged me to the front in the last kilometre. I was about fifth at the last corner - it was fairly mixed up there because of people taking different lines. Because of the steep finish I had a lot of speed - I came from a little bit further back and was just able to get past everyone." The stage was marked by a 10-man early break, which built a lead of almost six minutes over the peloton and which forced Wilkinson's Halfords Bike Hut team to chase and exhaust itself before the Conor Pass climb. Almost immediately after the start, eight riders clipped away, namely stage one winner Nico Eeckhout and teammate Paidi O'Brien (An Post-Sean Kelly Team), Stephen Halpin (Ireland Development Team), Tom Southam (Rapha Condor), Mark McNally (Team Halfords Bike Hut), Kit Gilham (Sigmasport/Specialized/Sportful), Peter Hawkins (IRC Ushers Insulations) and Michael Fitzgerald (Eurocycles). They were soon joined by Morten Kruse Brink (Team Designa Kokken) and Eeckhout's teammate David O'Loughlin. This group build a good lead and was in turn chased by a number of other riders, including several Irish competitors. And while O'Loughlin was not an immediate threat to Wilkinson - he was best-placed of the break, but had started the day seven minutes and 12 seconds back - the need to limit the gains of those two groups meant that the race leader's team was spent by the time it reached the big climb. Several riders surged ahead there and he was forced to chase into a headwind. More and more riders scurried away, and Wilkinson was overwhelmed. He crested the summit some way back, and was simply unable to get back on terms before the finish. O'Loughlin looked at one point like he was heading toward the yellow jersey, but he ended up with one of a different hue. "I wasn't really thinking about the race lead, it was more about going for the stage win and the mountains jersey," he said. The Mayo rider was first on four of the day's six climbs, including the top-ranked Conor Pass, and finished second to Kit Gilham (Sigmasport/Specialized/Sportful) on the other two. That left him with a three point lead over Gilham. "I'll try to get more points, but going for a stage win and moving up in the overall are nearly more important," he said. Richardson now holds a lead of two minutes and 49 seconds on Mads Christensen (Team Designa Kokken), and is a further 13 up on Barta. Wilkinson is now three minutes and 34 seconds back in sixth, while David McCann (Irish National Team) is best of the Irish riders in eighth, six minutes and nine seconds back. Richardson still has four more stages to go and he knows the race is far from won. But he's happy with the support he has. "I couldn't ask for four stronger teammates, so I have got the best chance possible." The race has reached the halfway point and continues tomorrow with a flatter 155-kilometre stage from Killorglin to Scariff. It features the category three climbs of Glansharoon and Barna Gap in the first half of the stage, and then has an undulating run in towards the finish.
