57th FBD Insurance Rás - 2.2Ireland, May 18-25, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - May 19: Cobh – Cahirciveen, 189 kmKirsipuu still winning, Wilkinson still leadingBy Shane Stokes Five years after taking the last of his four Tour de France stage wins, Estonian rider Jaan Kirsipuu proved his passion for cycling is still alive when he grabbed victory on stage three of the FBD Rás in Cahirciveen. Telling Cyclingnews after the stage that he is still racing for enjoyment, the 39-year-old bested far younger riders to snag the hilly 188 kilometre stage. He rode strongly throughout the stage, bridging across to a dangerous breakaway and then pushing on ahead with seven others before the day's final climb. At the finish, Kirsipuu beat former world track champion and Olympic medallist Chris Newton (Rapha Condor), David McCann (Ireland National Team) and Brian Kenneally (Meath Engraveit.ie/BDBC) in a gallop to the to the line. "I'm very happy to have the opportunity to race here again," said Kirsipuu. "I competed in the Tour de France when it started in Ireland in 1998 but didn't have a chance to see much of it then. I'm not racing with ProTour teams any more as I got tired of the constant pressure to win. Now I am enjoying the sport a lot more and travelling to countries that I didn't get to see much before." The four riders had clipped away from the breakaway group after the descent off the category one Coomakista climb, accelerating clear with approximately 15 kilometres to go. Stage one winner Niko Eeckhout (An Post M. Donnelly Grant Thornton Sean Kelly), Russell Downing (Candi TV Marshalls) and Laurent Didier (Designa Kokken) finished 51 seconds later, while Conor Murphy (IRC Usher Insulations) was a further 32 seconds back in eighth place. Overnight race leader Ian Wilkinson (CandiTV – Marshall's Pasta) had got across to an earlier breakaway, from which the first eight riders on the stage had then clipped away. He missed that later move and led home the main bunch, one minute and 39 seconds back. The second and third riders overall, Simon Richardson (Rapha Condor) and Mads Christensen (Designa Kokken) were also in that group. Their strong performance on stage two meant that they had a considerable buffer starting the stage and so their places in the top three were not threatened. Newton and McCann have edged into the top ten, but are five minutes 48 seconds and six minutes 28 seconds back respectively. McCann took over the pink jersey of King of the Mountains, his main target for the day. "My goal was to go for the mountains and that worked out," he said. "That meant I had to push hard for most of the stage, so I was a bit surprised to still be there at the end and fighting it out for the stage win." Kenneally was particularly aggressive in the finale, attempting to jump away as he knew that the three other riders in the break were faster than him if it came to a sprint. "I clipped away just before the kilometre to go sign and also with about 500 metres to go, but both times Kirsipuu brought me back," he said. "We had put him under pressure earlier on when on a climb, but he was very strong at the end of the stage. He brought me back both times, led out the sprint and still won. He was very impressive." The day featured constant attacking, with many riders getting away. Wilkinson's defence of the race lead was made more complicated by the small five-man teams in the race. "I still have the yellow jersey, but it was a harsh day out there," he said afterwards. "We set off trying to let the race progress itself and it did for quite a while. But it was quite aggressive when we came into those little roads and when we got over the main climb of the day. It was kind of intact then but, after the feed, they were going and coming back all the time." He implied that there was a bit of negative racing going on. "Simon (Richardson) was pretty much following me all day. He was well stuck to my wheel. But it was dangerous. Rapha ended up with four of the best riders in the break which was brilliant for them but dangerous because they are all capable of winning overall. "Fortunately we have a good time buffer on them." He was feeling the after-effects of his efforts on stage two, but is hopeful that he'll be stronger on stage four. "Obviously there was that little bit of fatigue [after Monday's break]," he said. "Maybe tomorrow will be a day for good legs again." The 2.2-ranked FBD Rás continues on Wednesday with another tough stage. It runs 178 kilometres from Cahirciveen to Killorglin and includes five category three climbs plus the first category Conor Pass.
