57th FBD Insurance Rás - 2.2Ireland, May 18-25, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Next Stage Stage 1 - May 17: Kilcullen - Wexford, 125 kmVictory for Eeckhout on day one of FBD RásBy Shane Stokes Timing his move to perfection, the 2006 Belgian road race champion Nico Eeckhout grabbed the opening stage of the FBD Rás in Ireland. The An Post M. Donnelly Grant Thornton competitor netted his third victory of the year when he won the 125-kilometre stage from Kilcullen to Wexford, beating Russell Downing (Britain Candi TV Marshalls), Nicholas Walker (Australia Cinelli-Down Under), first Irishman Daniel Clifford (Kildare Projector World) and several others in the dash to the line. "I saw in the race book that the last corner was 200 metres from the finish," Eeckhout said afterwards. "I realised that you had to be first into the corner, and the uphill finish was good for me with my power. I got a good win." One of Eeckhout's rivals in the sprint was quadruple Tour de France stage winner Jaan Kirsipuu, now racing with the Norway Giant Veoila squad. However, the Estonian blunted his own speed when tried an unsuccessful solo breakaway inside the final 30 kilometres and had to be content with fifth in the dash to the line. Eeckhout said that he wasn't worried by that move. "I saw that he [Kirsipuu] had a good day but alone it is too difficult with the whole peloton behind you," he said. "Everybody can ride hard, so alone it's too difficult." The victory is Eeckhout's third win of the season, following two stage victories in the Vuelta a Extremadura in Spain. It is a big boost for the Irish-registered An Post M. Donnelly Grant Thornton Sean Kelly team, which took overall honours in last year's race with Stephen Gallagher. Gallagher is not taking part this year, but today's success shows that the squad is intent on chasing big results once again. Like Eeckhout, today's runner-up Russell Downing was also marked out as one to watch in the race. He's taken five victories thus far this season, including the recent Lincoln Grand Prix, and finished second overall in last year's Tour of Ireland. In fact, he was leading the Irish event until the final few kilometres, and this motivates him to perform well in the country's other big international cycling contest. "I went well in the Tour of Ireland last year and I'd love to perform well this week," Downing said. "This is my third time to do the race...I did it back in 1999 with the Linda McCartney Team." Home performancesIt was a solid-enough start for the Irish riders, with three of them placing in the first 11 and another scooping one of the special jerseys awarded at the end of each stage. Daniel Clifford (Kildare Projector World) was best in the gallop, netting fourth, while Sam Bennett (Tipperary Dan Morrissey) also finished amongst the first seven sprinters. Their compatriot Colin Robinson (Meath Martin Donnelly) also earned some strong applause at the end of the stage. He broke clear early on with John Dempsey (Tipperary Dan Morrissey) and outsprinted him at the day's sole King of the Mountains climb in Knocknacree, 29.8 kilometres after the start in Kilcullen. This has earned him a stint in the best climber jersey. It was a big turnaround from last year, when he did his first FBD Rás and finished last. "I'm cycling three years, having been doing running before that," Robinson said. "I was lanterne rouge last year when I did my first Rás, but I'm more experienced and stronger now. Today, the goal was to go for the King of the Mountains prime and things worked out well." Clifford's fourth place was a surprise to some, but he said that he went into the race determined to do something. "I was hoping to ride well on a few stages this week," he stated. "I got myself into the right position for the sprint and things worked out well." Earlier, compatriot Philip Lavery (Dublin KTM Winning Solutions) had made his own bid for glory when he went clear with Jan Barta (Austria Arbö KTM Junkers). The duo were away for approximately 30 kilometres but, with gusting winds, wet conditions and an attentive peloton behind, it was an impossible task. Another bunch sprint could well happen again on the 178-kilometre stage to Cobh, but the hillier terrain will increase the chances of things breaking up. The third category climbs of Glenmore and Youghal plus the second category ascent of The Sweep are platforms for attacks and, with five man teams, the An Post M. Donnelly Grant Thornton Sean Kelly squad won't work too hard to defend yellow at this early stage. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Stephen McMahon
