25th Redlands Bicycle Classic - NEUSA, March 26-29, 2009Main Page Results men Results women Men overall standings Women overall standings Previous Stage Stage 3 - March 29: Sunset Road Race, 105.8/146.5kmWamsley aims last bullet at victory; Louder crowned the overall championBy Kirsten Robbins in Redlands, California The Redlands Bicycle Classic Best Sprinter, Kyle Wamsely (Colavita-Sutter Home) only had to finish the final and most difficult stage to keep his green jersey, but instead he dug a little deeper to capture a solo victory. Wamsley broke away from a shrunken peloton to claim his first NRC victory of the 2009 season ahead of Kirk Carlsen (Garmin-Holoweko Partners-Felt) and Jacob Erker (Kelly Benefit Strategies). "There are no words to describe how I feel about winning the last stage of this race," said Wamsley who solidified his win in the best sprinter's competition in the opening circuits. "I've never finished this race before so to be wearing the green jersey and taking a stage win is incredible. I used my last sprint. I really did use the one bullet that I had left to get away from the field and it worked." The front group was mixed with the top rider's in the general classification and they barreled down to the five short finishing circuits after completing an exhausting twelve laps of a larger loop. The tactical game between the all-rounders meant that none were successful in holding a gap for longer than a few seconds. Upon a short lull in the field, Wamsely used the one sprint he had left to take a shot at victory. "The first two laps were terrible for me but then I started to feel really good," said Wamsley who kept his position close to the front so not to get caught behind the many separations on the circuits grueling climb. "I kept my fingers crossed that I could stay in the front group and when I got over the last climb and down to the final circuits – it was time to race." Jeff Louder (BMC) savoured his overall victory after a four-day battle to the very end. The Salt Lake City native took the overall lead during the stage two Beaumont Circuit Race and held on to it with the unshakable support of his BMC teammates. Louder accepted his hard-earned yellow jersey at top the final podium ahead of second-placed Tom Zirbel (Bissell) and third-placed Ben Day (Fly V Australia). "This is the 25th anniversary of this race and I was looking at the palmarès of the event and I can't believe that my name is going to go up alongside all those guys," said Louder. "The who's who of American cycling are on that list. I'm not a rising star. I'm in the eve of my career and have been doing this for a long time. It's really an honour to win it. It's called the Redlands Bicycle Classic because it is a classic. I'm very pleased to get to win it and I'm very proud to win it." Runner-up in the stage, Carlsen stood atop the podium a second time as the winner of the King of the Mountain competition. Carlsen successfully defended his lead going into the final stage, accumulating points in three of the six KOM sprints. Carlsen and his U-23 Garmin-Holoweko Partners-Felt gathered together at the final podium presentation for one last hurrah as winners of the Best Team classification. "The KOM jersey was very important to us and once I knew that was locked up we went after the team GC," Carlsen said. "Our team is great this year and we are all motivated to help each other out in the finishes to be able to go for the overall team GC here. We want to make an impression, not just as a U23 team but as one of the best teams in the country." BMC relied on team work to get them through the 'Queen' stage without faltering under the relentless attacks from rival teams who wanted the yellow jersey. "All the teams rode great today," said Louder. "You can't win a bike race without a team today and I really want to give this yellow jersey to my teammates because they worked so hard." Threatening momentsIt is known as the "Queen" stage for a grueling climb up to Sunset Ridge Road. There were no flat sections on the 12-kilometre circuit and the severely undulating terrain has met the demise of more than half the peloton. The men had to complete 12 large laps plus five short finishing circuits. Cesar Grajales (Rock Racing), Brad White (OUCH p/b Maxxis) and Frank Pipp (Bissell) set the stage for a tough day in the saddle separating themselves from the field on the first climb. The trio forced BMC to take control early. The second significant breakaway set sail after the second uphill battle for KOM points. Carlsen along with Burke Swindlehurst (Bissell), Karl Menzies (Ouch p/b Maxxis) and Justin England (California Giant-Specialized) stayed away for two full laps at a 20-second advantage. More ammunition was thrown at the BMC team when Tim Johnson (Ouch p/b Maxxis) and Peter Stetina (Garmin-Holoweko Partners-Felt) flew the coup on the climb with three laps to go, gaining a 40-second margin on the tiring BMC squad. "I wasn't sure I had anything left by the last couple of laps," Louder said. "Brent [Bookwalter] had done so much work on those last climbs and at one point I was alone and didn't think I had anything more, but Brent came right back." The most threatening move of the day was dealt by Rory Sutherland (Ouch p/b Maxxis) who made a solo effort that forced the top three GC riders to chase. Sutherland's 18-second advantage combined with the ten-second time bonus at the finish line had the potential for overall victory. "OUCH were probably the primary aggressors of the day and they are all very experienced," Louder said. "They put us under a lot of pressure. Rory was cagey and he saved it for the end, the last lap. He hit me after everyone else had hit – Ben Day, Chris Baldwin and Tom Zirbel all put in some good digs. It was a matter of him saving it and putting everything into one move and I couldn't react to him so I had to just rely on the priorities of the other riders. I got a little bit of help from Bissell and the Fly V guys which was a God-send because I was cramping." Teutenberg crowned women's Redlands Classic champion by one secondPowers captures final stageAlison Powers (Team Type 1) used her downhill ski experience to fly through the finishing circuit's tricky chicane and claim victory on the Sunset stage of the Redlands Bicycle Classic. Powers sprinted in ahead of Joanne Keisanowski (TIBCO) and Nikki Butterfield (Webcor-Builders). "These corners are my specialty and I knew I needed to go early through them," said Powers who also leads the Women's Prestige Cycling Series. "My slow is usually their fast through the corners so this worked well to my advantage today. We turned that corner and I thought if I have one chance this is it. I just wanted to see what would happen – I'm so excited." Ina-Yoko Teutenberg (Columbia-HighRoad) celebrated her early season success as the winner of the 2009 Redlands Bicycle Classic. Teutenberg used the event's hefty time bonus hotspot sprints to gain the last second needed to claim the overall yellow jersey from Amber Neben (Nürnberger-Shoair). Stage winner, Alison Powers rounded out the GC podium in third place. "I was babied today," laughed Teutenberg in her yellow jersey. "I could not do that for a ten-day tour and I have a lot of respect for the girls that do it. It's a lot more pressure. I wouldn't not have been able to do this without them." It is known as the "Queen" stage for a grueling climb up to Sunset Ridge Road. There were no flat sections on the 12-kilometre circuit and this severely undulating terrain met the demise of the majority of the women's peloton. The women competed nine laps before descending down to the finish line in the downtown centre. "I knew time bonuses were going to be a factor especially when Ina is as fit as she is right now," said Neben who wore the yellow jersey from the prologue until the final stage. "I fought hard for it but today didn't go the way I had hoped it would go. I give all the credit to Ina because she was very good and she earned her victory." Lots of hillsThe circuit was littered with Queen of the Mountain climbs and only one time bonuses presented itself on the first lap, at the top of the first climb. The odds were that Neben would use her climbing prowess to gain valuable seconds back from the powerful German sprinter. Roles reversed on the first ascent and Teutenberg found herself three seconds richer at the top... and the virtual leader by one second. "The first uphill wasn't the problem for me it was after that, having the yellow jersey that was a problem," said Teutenberg who crashed twice on course. "I'm not used to being a GC rider, it's a totally different ball game. Amber is not at her peak form yet, she tried but I wasn't in danger. My team did everything for me and we had control for most of the day." By virtue of winning stages 1 and 2, Teutenberg accumulated enough points to capture the Best Sprinter's green jersey. Runner-up, Kori Seehafer (Team Type 1) picked up points in the previous day's criterium but it was not enough to pass Teutenberg for the jersey. Seehafer is leading the best sprinter competition in the Women's Prestige Cycling Series. Tiffany Cromwell (Colavita-Sutter Home) focused her attention on winning the Queen of the Mountain competition. Cromwell was accidentally given the red jersey after stage 1 in Beaumont but proved herself to be a worthy contender on the Sunset climb. Cromwell accumulated points in all three QOM's to claim her spot on the jersey podium at the final presentation. Team TIBCO won the event's overall team classification for consistently placing their riders inside the top ten on each stage. They did no disappoint the crowds who anticipated another aggressive showing from them on the final day. Upon the return of solo breakaway rider Alexis Rhodes (Webcor-Builders), Team TIBCO fired off attacks one-by-one all the way to the finish line. "We would have liked to get someone away today and we gave it a good shot coming into the finish," said Kiesanowski. "We came away with winning the team GC and that shows how strong we are together. It was really good to be a part of that." PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by John Devich/ Jonathan Devich/
