PPA Cape Argus Giro del Capo Challenge 3 - 1.2South Africa, March 4-8, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Race Next Race Race 3 - March 6: Paarl - Paarl, 171.3kmBarloworld's Briton beats the restSteve Cummings continued Barloworld's successful week in South Africa by winning the third race in the Giro del Capo series. Cummings success follows wins by South African teammates Robert Hunter and Chris Froome. Cummings claimed victory solo, with South African Johann Rabie (Neotel) taking second place three seconds behind. Dennis van Niekerk (Konica Minolta) claimed third place in a sprint from a bunch of 14 riders. "It was very hot again today," said Barloworld manager Claudio Corti. "The team took strain and worked from the start, but they gave me results. Cummings is in good shape and he deserved to win. Of course I am happy." MTN's David George escaped from the first breakaway, gaining a two minute advantage, on the climb up Franschoek Pass after 35 kilometres. Barloworld's Daryl Impey remained behind in the second break which was just a few seconds ahead of a third group containing Cummings. George was caught at the 60 kilometre mark, sparking a counter attack from a new group of around 40 riders. Over the following kilometres the group ballooned as smaller groups caught back on to the main peloton. Froome attacked over the top of the climb with MTN teammates George and Kevin Evans. A group of 30 riders split from the peloton in pursuit of the leading duo. With the leading trio re-absorbed by the larger group, it then split into smaller bunches inside the final five kilometres. Cummings and Rabie attacked as the finish neared and were able to stay away to the line. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Raymond Cox/www.mirra.co.za
