Mt. Hood Cycling Classic - NEUSA, June 3-7, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 1 - June 4: Copper Spur Circuit Race, 85/66 milesBissell rules Mt. Hood's Copper Spur raceBy Heidi Swift in Hood River, Oregon Team Bissell made full-use of its power to put two of its riders in the top spots Thursday's Mt. Hood Cycling Classic stage one in Hood River, Oregon. Paul Mach took the stage win with teammate Morgan Schmitt right behind on the fast uphill finish at the end of the 136.8-kilometre (85 miles) Copper Spur circuit race. "I've been getting a lot of second places this year so it's good to win one," said Mach. "We just kept one-two-in' them [alternately attacking the field - ed.] on the final climb. I thought we might have started too early, but Paul pulled it out," Schmitt added. The men covered four-and-a-half laps of the 29.8-kilometre (18.5mi) circuit. It included almost 2,590 metres (8,500 feet) of climbing in the five ascents up to the Cooper Spur Ski Resort area. Attacks start earlyThey wasted little time getting things started with an early barrage of attacks. With four kilometre left of the Cooper Spur climb, Kona's Ryan Trebon went on the offensive and put a 20-second gap on the field. Adam Thus (Trek Red Truck) and Allen Krughoff (Rio Grande) bridged and the trio worked together to put as much as 2:10 into the peloton. Halfway through the second lap, Logan Garey (Rio Grande) attempted to join the front two. Dan Martin (Safeway/Bicycles Plus) also began to battle his way up to the break. He caught and then passing the fading Thus and struggling Garey. Eventually, only Martin and Krughoff were left ahead of a Bissell-led chase. Krughoff gave way and left Martin on his own. "We had two guys – Omer Kem and Graham Howard – doing all the work for the last lap and a half. They weren't getting much help up there," said Schmitt. Kem and Howard timed the catch perfectly, reeling Martin in just as they reached the final climb of Cooper Spur Road. Schmitt and Mach attacked relentlessly up the grade until Mach was able to get a gap. Schmitt returned to Mach in the final 500 metres."Morgan came around me, but I looked back and the others were still coming hard. I wanted to make sure I didn't get caught on the line by a sprinter." Justin England (CalGiant) won the sprint in the small chasing group for third-place spot and four-second time bonus. The time bonuses for the one-two Bissell victory -- 10 and six seconds -- moved both riders to the top of the classification. Mach holds an eight second lead over Schmitt. Chris Baldwin is 18 seconds back in third overall. Melissa McWhirter solos for win and overall lead Melissa McWhirter (Veloforma) won Mount Hood Cycling Classic's Copper Spur circuit race Thursday thanks to a strong counter attack. The win also gave her the leader's yellow jersey in the second day of racing. "I just took off. I don't have a great sprint, so I just went for it," said McWhirter. Robina Farina (VAC) and Gillian Moody (Total Restoration) finished second and third. Edwige Pitel (Sorella Forte), who won stage one finished just seven seconds behind. The circuit race covered 106 kilometres (66 miles) and and four assents to Cooper Spur's ski resort. Teri Sheasby (Bend Bike n Sport) made a brave attack that succeeded for a half-lap. Afterwards, the group stayed together for most of the race and set up for a climbers' showdown. The last four kilometres"Martina [Patella (VAC)] launched a massive attack at the bottom of the climb that shattered the field," Leah Goldstein (ValueAct) told Cyclingnews. Alisha Welsh followed Patella and a small group formed behind them. Patella eventually gave in with three kilometres remaining and Edwige Pitel (Sorella Forte) started a counter-move. McWhirter decided it was her time when the group caught Pitel with only one kilometre left. It paid off. The stage victory put McWhirter into the leader's jersey heading into tomorrow's Scenic Gorge Time Trial. Farina is in second at two seconds and Goldstein at nine seconds back. Goldstein has her sights set on a repeat of last year's win. "The time-trial is really the important day for me," she said. ValueAct teammate Farina feels good about the team's positioning for the rest of the race. "We wanted to keep things in control. That was the goal and I think we did it. We're pretty confident in Leah's time-trialling ability for tomorrow," she told Cyclingnews. Pitel, a former French time trial champion, sits only 12 seconds back in the classification. "When I looked at the race, I could see that the time trial was going to be one of the most important stages," said Pitel. "It suits me, because it has long climbs, but then it also suits all of the other girls who are in the top five." The time trialTomorrow's time-trial will shape the classification. It will take the riders over 29.8 kilometres (18.5 miles) and up almost 610 metres (2000 feet) of climbing along the Columbia River Gorge Scenic Highway from The Dalles to Hood River.
