Tour de San Luis - 2.1Argentina, January 19-25, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 7 - January 25: San Luis - San Luis, 167.1 kmHaedo wins finale, Lucero biggest career victoryBy Kirsten Robbins in San Luis, Argentina Argentina's Juan José Haedo (Saxo Bank) won the final stage of the Tour of San Luis and the first race of his 2009 season. He surfed front of the field at speeds upwards of 85 kilometres per hour and jumped into a blazing victory ahead of Mattia Gavazzi (Diquigiovanni) and Luis Mansilla (Team Chile). "I knew from the beginning that there were only two real sprint stages," said Haedo referring to his second place in stage one and the last stage. "I actually wasn't really keen to sprint in this one because it's not my favourite kind of sprint, down hill and more than 80 kilometres an hour. It's risky and it's not really based on having good form. You have to really time it well. I wasn't too happy that it came down to a bunch sprint but in the end but that's what I have to do. This is what my team pays me for." Teams that vied to give their sprinters the best position included Saxo Bank, Diquigiovanni, Liquigas, Bissell, Sparkasse and Colavita-Sutter Home. Each respective lead-out train edged ahead of the others during the last fifteen kilometres of the stage. "Matti [Breschel] left me with two kilometres to go on the back of the other sprinters," Haedo said. "He made a huge effort and he deserved to have a win as much as I did. In the end I found the Colavita train and got on my brothers [Sebastian Haedo] wheel. I jumped before he jumped." There was a flurry of emotions at the finish line where thousands of fans came to watch Alfredo 'El Flaco' Lucero crowned as the winner of the third annual Tour of San Luis. This victory marked the most important of his career, as a San Luis native winning what is known as the most important race in Argentina. He finished 52 seconds ahead of his teammate Jorge Giacinti and more than one minute ahead of Columbian José Serpa (Diquigiovanni). "I want to dedicate this to my family and the people of San Luis, who supported to me during this race," Lucero said. "It is an incredible dreamed. The guys in the Argentinean national team did an enormous amount of work so that I could win and that is something that I am never going to forget." Lucero took the leaders jersey after the stage three time trial and maintained his lead through to the seventh and final stage. "I counted on the aid of my teammate Giacinti," he continued. "The key was to go day to day and not to lose hope." Sebastian Haedo (Colavita-Sutter Home) won the best sprinter competition and Xavier Tondo (Andalucía-Cajasur) won the best climb competition. "It is always great to have won a jersey at a tour," said Tondo. "It was not the goal going into the stage race. It just happened through my breakaways and my victory on Merlo in stage five. I am happy to have it." Ivan Basso (Liquigas), winner of the 2006 Giro d' Italia winner, noted the importance this event has on his quest to win the pink jersey in May. "This was a great stage race," said Basso, who placed fifth in the overall. "It gave me everything I needed with the time trial the climbing and very hard racing for this time of the year." The final stageSome 113 cyclists started the seventh and final stage that began outside the Casa de Gobierno in San Luis. The international peloton was neutralised until the outskirts of the city where they completed three large circuits. They were 167.1 kilometres that incorporated two intermediate sprints and one KOM. An early break of five riders included Vincenzo Nibali and Murilo Fischer (Liquigas), Matti Breschel and Lasse Bøchman (Saxo Bank) and Eric Baumann (Sparkasse). The sprinters rolled through the two intermediate sprint during the first two circuits. Winner of the Tour of San Luis best sprinter competition, Sebastian Haedo (Colavita-Sutter Home) finished the stage race with a one-point advantage ahead of Baumann. The early move splintered at the start of the third lap. Team Argentina reeled in four riders but Nibali continued on his own for an additional ten kilometres, possibly hoping for another rider to bridge across. He too was caught forty kilometres to the finish line. A second break attempted to get away hoping that Team Argentina would give them enough leeway to get to the finish line first. The three men included Carlos José Ochoa (Diquigiovanni), Jesús Rosendo (Andalucía Cajasur) and Noslen Funes (Team Mexico). Ochoa's presence allowed his teammates to recover and prepare to deliver Gavazzi to the final sprint. "My teammates worked hard today," said Gavazzi. "They were aggressive and this week we have been using our riders tactfully. They did a good job today in the final lead-out. They stayed at the front all the way into the last kilometre. I think we have had some great days here with two victories and many podiums." PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Roberto Bettini/www.bettiniphoto.net
