Tour de San Luis - 2.1Argentina, January 19-25, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 6 - January 24: Potrero De Los Funes (Circuit), 121kmAmaran holds off Argentina heat for victoryLucero holds celeste jerseyBy Kirsten Robbins in San Luis, Argentina Cuban Luis Amaran (Colavita-Sutter Home) fought against Team Argentina and the summer heat to earn a solo victory in stage six of the Tour of San Luis. Danish sprinter Matti Breschel (Saxo Bank) jumped out of a late-race breakaway to take second place ahead of the field sprint won by Manuel Belletti (Diquigiovanni). "Today was the hottest day in the whole stage race," said Amaran regarding the forty-five degree heat. "It was really difficult today because I had a few riders behind me and then the rest of the field back. But, that's okay because it made for a grand victory." San Luis talent Alfredo Lucero (Team Argentina) maintained an overall lead of more than one minute ahead of his teammate Jorge Giacinti and José Serpa (Diquigiovanni). "Today was only about protecting the overall," said Lucero, who manned the back of a nearly sixteen-rider train. The Argentinean A-team recruited help from their B-team to support Lucero. "Everyone is prepared to protect this jersey. Of course, the guys are getting tired because they've been working really hard in the last few stages." The final two laps offered the thousands of San Luis fans a touch of suspense watching Amaran grind his way to a victory just under a minute ahead of the bunch sprint. Behind Amaran, remnants of his original break were reabsorbed into the peloton with the exception of David De La Fuente (Fuji-Servetto), Kjell Carlström (Liquigas) and Noslen Funes (Team Cuba). The three chasers struggled to make it to the finish line ahead of the field. "The laps on the circuits were hard and I had to push very hard on the last lap when I was getting tired," Amaran said. "It was so hot at some points that I had to take cold water bottles from the fans and pour it over my head." As the peloton neared the tail-end of the break, Breschel jumped across to the trio within the final two laps. He barely made it to the finish line for second place while his companions were swallowed up by the field sprint won by the Italian sprinter Belletti. "Our tactic was to be aggressive from the start and to try to go into the breakaways," said Breschel. "We knew it was going to be a really hard course, mainly because of the weather. In the end, I was to try to attack and win in my own way and JJ [Haedo] had to wait for the sprint and win his way." Potrero de los Fuenes Formula One CircuitsJust when the international peloton thought it could not get any hotter, it did! The 22 teams from around the world raced through temperatures in the high thirties this week, typical of Argentinean summers. Tour of San Luis' stage six saw the field line up on a newly built race track intended for Formula One circuit racing. The heat rose to more than forty-five degrees on the black tarmac. The field contested a slightly shorter distance of 120 kilometres compared to the previous day's 200-kilometre road events. The race included six laps of a six-kilometre track followed by one 60-kilometre loop and finally back to the track for another six laps before the finish. The flags dropped to start the race and the peloton jumped full-throttle out off the start line. Several small groups formed but Team Argentina was reluctant to let anything go too early. As expected, the leading team had its hands full monitoring two significant breakaways during the race. "We didn't want to let too much time between the breakaway and us today," said Lucero, who used his team to bring back two large breakaways during the race. "It isn't easy for them to work so hard at the front. We have one day to go and our tactics will be the same. Hopefully we don't have any complications and we end the stage tomorrow with the leader's jersey." The peloton settled down when the right group of non-classification contenders formed up the road. Team Argentina settled into a rhythm, holding the fresh breakaway at a manageable 30 seconds. The early move included Nelson Vitorino (Palmeiras-Resort), Jason McCartney (Saxo Bank), Jesús Del Nero (Fuji-Servetto), Javier Ramírez (Andalucía-Cajasur), Eric Baumann (Sparkasse), Andy Jacques-Maynes (Bissell), Aaron Olson and Davide Frattini (Colavita-Sutter Home), Edwin Avila (Team Columbia), Rida Cador (Atlas Romers), John Parra (Team Mexico) and Pabo Pintos (Team Uruguay). Baumann stole the first intermediate sprint and moved into third place in the overall sprint competition behind leader Sebastian Haedo (Colavita-Sutter Home) and second placed Ben Jacques-Maynes (Bissell). The large group stayed out front for 50 kilometres but lacked motivation to gain any more than half a minute. Team Argentina reeled them in on the descent following the intermediate KOM. The second and much more threatening move went at the halfway point of the race. The late break contenders included the eventual stage winner Amaran, Carlström and De la Fuente along with Kurt-Asle Arvesen (Saxo Bank), Carlos José Ochoa (Diquigiovanni), Andy Jacques-Maynes (Bissell), Andreas Schillinger and Jean Schuter (Sparkasse), Sebastian Haedo and Andy Guptill (Colavita-Sutter Home), Gustavo Lopez (Team Argentina) and Hernan Cline (Team Uruguay). Luis Amaran was not content to let Team Argentina reel him in and he made his winning move on the way back to the track with thirty-five kilometres to go. The rest of the bunch made it to the track but the peloton reabsorbed them with three laps to go. Stage seven marks the final road race of the Tour of San Luis. The downtown crowds will likely be treated to a field sprint at the finish line. The 167-kilometre course is rolling, incorporating much of the down town city centre. They will leave San Luis and race toward the city of La Florida. Upon returning to San Luis the riders will contend a gradual downhill into the finish line.
