Tour de San Luis - 2.1Argentina, January 19-25, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - January 23: San Francisco Del Mote De Oro - Merlo (Mirador), 204.8 kmTondo victorious atop MerloBy Kirsten Robbins in San Luis, Argentina Spaniard Xavier Tondo (Andalucía-Cajasur) countered a flurry of attacks to take the Tour of San Luis stage five victory atop Mount Merlo. The savvy climber reached the peak just seconds ahead of Jorge Giacinti (Team Argentina) and José Serpa (Diquigiovanni). "It was a very hard climb," said Tondo, who fell two kilometres short of a win in the previous stage. "It was hard to win this race because there were so many attacks happening in the last kilometres. But it was a perfect way to win." San Luis native Alfredo Lucero (Team Argentina) held onto the celeste leader's jersey by one minute ahead of his teammate Giacinti. Serpa's consistent climbing bumped him up into third place. "The last climb was really hard and I didn't have the legs to go with the front group," said Lucero, who arrived more than 30 seconds after winner. "I had a teammate up the road who was with the front group. It was only important that I climb and not lose too much time." Team Argentina allowed an early break away of three riders to gain more than ten minutes on the field. The leading team benefited from having three times the amount of horsepower when they recruited the Argentinean B and U23 squads to help set tempo at the front of peloton. The additional help allowed the A-Team's best climbers to stay fresh for the finish. They timed their play perfectly and reeled the trio at the base of the climb. According to Lucero, the escapees were not a threat to his position. It allowed them to stay away until the end and meant they did not have to burn energy chasing down other threatening riders during the lengthy stage."The team worked hard today and there was little time to recuperate," said Lucero. "We have done everything we could in the last few stages to keep the lead. They have been doing a great job." At the base of the climb, Diquigiovanni sent off a flurry of attack that reduced the front group to a mere eight climbers. The world-class ascenders included Tondo, Giacinti and Serpa along with Vincenzo Nibali and Ivan Basso (Liquigas), Jackson Rodriguez and Carlos José Ochoa (Diquigiovanni) and Renato Seabra (Team Brazil). Ochoa was the first to go solo but he was quickly joined by second placed rider in the classification, Giacinti. Precious few seconds separated Serpa and Giacinti in the overall thus the pair kept a close watch on one another. The eight riders regrouped with two kilometres to go where Rodriguez attacked in hopes of shedding Giacinti from the group. No such luck and the group rejoined a second time with one kilometre to go. The 2006 Giro d' Italia winner, Basso, sat at the back of the select bunch while his dedicated teammate Nibali reeled in nearly every attack. Nibali put in one strong attack himself with 600-metres to go, in pursuit of a stage victory. He was immediately countered by Serpa followed by Giacinti. Tondo patiently watch the pair play out there respective tactics until he made his winning move with 200 metres to the top. The three amigosThe international field transferred from San Luis to the stage five starting city of San Francisco Del Monte De Oro. The 190-kilometre stage offered another tough day in the saddle with two intermediate sprints and three King of the Mountain climbs. Furthermore, the day ended with the last of three mountaintop finishes, an eight-kilometre ascent to Merlo. Three riders formed the early move that gained a maximum of ten minutes before being caught at the base of the final climb with eight kilometres to go, totaling a 192 kilometre effort. The riders included Pablo Pintos (Uruguay) and teammates Antonio Cabrera and Pratricio Almonacid (Team Chile). Team Argentina manned the front of the peloton, keeping an eye on select riders close behind in the general classification. Neither of the three escapees posed a threat to the race leader, Lucero and they were given extra leeway to ride out front. They also swallowed up the points available at two intermediate sprints located 56 and 149 kilometres into the race. The sprinter's competition is lead by Sebastian Haedo (Colavita-Sutter Home), who is several points ahead of Ben Jacques-Maynes (Bissell). They rotated around one another taking equal pulls, gaining their largest margin at the base of the lengthy 15-kilometre intermediate climb. The category two ascent took the cyclists over the Alto de Cantana and down the other side toward the Merlo Mountain range. The separation between the leaders and the peloton dropped fast as they passed the ten kilometres to go marker. They continued pedaling through exhaustion, out of the flat lands and into the mountains. As fate would have it, they were caught at the base of the climb. The race left the mountains in Merlo and heads back into San Luis for the final two stages. Stage six will start on the newly built Formula One race track in Portero de los Funes. It's considered a day for the sprinters and a slightly shorter distance of 130 kilometres. They will begin by racing several laps on the track before proceeding out onto the rolling terrain surrounding the region of San Luis. They will then return to complete several more circuits of the track. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Roberto Bettini/www.bettiniphoto.net
