OCBC Cycle Singapore Criterium - NESingapore, February 22, 2009Pell wins as Singapore debutsBy Greg Johnson Australia's David Pell (Savings & Loans) has claimed victory at the inaugural OCBC Cycle Singapore Criterium. Pell out-sprinted Alan Marangoni (Group Navigare) and Ricado Van De Velde (Garmin-Slipstream) from a four-strong group to claim victory. Pell, Marangoni, Van De Velde and Jason Allen (New Zealand) broke away as the rain-soaked event reached its half-way mark. The four riders resisted efforts by Daniele Nardello and his Fuji-Servetto teammates to bring the race back together. Team Lampre's Andre Grendene won the bunch sprint for fifth place. Grendene out-paced Alex Rasmussen (Saxo Bank) and Brett Aitken (Savings & Loans). "As Savings and Loans is desperately looking for sponsors who have an interest in not only Australia but also Asia, after Jai Crawford's second place in Langkawi, we are well on our way to be team to be contended with," said Savings & Loans' Pat Jonker. "Our next race will be the Jelajah Malaysia in the mean time we will be racing back home." The Singapore race featured a total of $72,000USD in prize money. The money on offer saw many riders stay in the region following last week's Tour de Langkawi to contest the inaugural race.
