Tour of Thailand - 2.2Thailand, April 4-9, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - April 7: Loei – Phu Ruea, 138.2kmErker takes over GCCanadian Jacob Erker (Kelly Benefit Strategies) moved into the overall lead of the Tour of Thailand on stage four after a day of aggressive racing from his team of North Americans. The stage from Loei to Phu Ruea featured the only climb of the Tour. A three-man breakaway went clear on the way to the top, with four more men bridging across. Erker's teammate Zack Bell was present in the lead group, and he picked up the intermediate sprint and a three second time bonus. The break gained a 1:30 lead, which threatened the morning's race leader, Seok Kyu Suh of the Seoul Cycling Team. "Our team has ridden great all week, but today was exceptional," says Jonas Carney, performance director, who is leading the Thailand KBS squad. "We wanted Zack to get up the road, put pressure on the Seoul team and hopefully join the climbers when they caught him. He did an amazing job of making that happen and set our team up." Australian Adam Semple attacked from the break, and went on to win the stage, while the rest of the riders were caught by a chase group near the top of the climb. Erker, Neil Shirley and Daniel Bowman were in that group of 15 for the American team, and were able to distance the race leader. Shirley escaped alone to finish second on the stage, while Erker finished ahead of Seoul's Hyo Suk Gong to take over the race lead, even though the two are tied on time.
