45th Presidential Cycling Tour - 2.1Turkey, April 12-19, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - April 14: Kusadasi - Bodrum, 166.1kmSchulze strikes in BodrumBy Jean-François Quénet in Bodrum, Turkey André Schulze (PSK Whirlpool) was happy to see that nobody managed to anticipate the bunch sprint in Bodrum, unlike the day before when David Garcia Dapena's attack in the closing kilometres prevented him from winning in Kusadasi. Schulze won the field sprint in yesterday's stage, but finished three seconds behind Garcia Dapena for second place. Stage three of the Presidential Tour of Turkey gave him the opportunity to get his first win of the year and the 20th of his career that began in 2001. "I knew this finale as I rode here last year already," Schulze said. "I was in perfect position for the last three kilometres and I wasn't affected by the crash at the roundabout because it happened behind me. With 200 metres to go I moved up and then took the lead with 100 metres left. I'm as happy today as I was frustrated yesterday." This time around, Italy's Giuseppe Palumbo was the frustrated one. "I lost two companions in the crash, including Alessandro Donati who would have been my lead-out man," said the Acqua e Sapone rider. "I did my sprint by myself but I made the mistake of starting too early with 300 metres to go. I'm disappointed because I thought I could make it. At least I can be satisfied that my body is responding well again. I was in a lot of pain after crashing in Istanbul on Sunday." South Africa's Darryl Impey finished in third place after getting a great help from his compatriot Robert Hunter. "This is my first podium of the year," said the rider from Gauteng. "I suppose it's a step in the right direction but it was a bit chaotic at the end. I would have loved to win." Schulze reckoned the Tour of Turkey isn't as hard as it was last year because of the headwind faced by the riders since they started rolling south alongside the Aegean Sea. However, he knows there are hills to come. "I'll have to fight hard to survive in the coming stages," Schulze said. "I'd like to win the last stage in Alanya where I finished second last year. But I don't think I'll be able to win the green jersey." Mauro Finetto (CSF Group-Navigare) remained in the leader's yellow jersey. In Marmaris, the contenders of the 45th Presidential Tour of Turkey will discover an idyllic town on the Mediterranean. This is where Garcia Dapena built his overall win last year. The Spaniard is ready to go on the offensive gain after winning stage two. How it unfoldedSoon after the start in Kusadasi four riders attacked the peloton, Vladimir Isaychev (Xacobeo Galicia), Oscar Garcia (Contentpolis-Ampo), Alessandro Fantini (Acqua e Sapone) and Zvonimir Pokupec (Loborika), but the latter was quickly dropped. The trio's lead extended to 10:00 at kilometre 50 and it's largest lead of 12:00 at kilometre 75. The break posed no threat to Mauro Finetto's lead as the highest ranked rider off the front was Isaychev in 110th position on general classification, 28:02 behind the yellow jersey. The only hot spot sprint of the day at kilometre 38.5 was won by Fantini ahead of Garcia and Isaychev. The riders finished in the same order at the Turkish Beauty sprint at kilometre 73.1. With 60 kilometres to go, ISD, Team Milram and Barloworld gathered at the front of the peloton and the gap to the breakaway began to diminish quickly. After only 10 kilometres of effort the break's lead dropped to 6:45 over the peloton. On the second category climb at kilometre 117.5 - the first one of the 45th Presidential Tour of Turkey - Garcia was dropped from the break. Isaychev and Fantini continued to work together and with 20 kilometres they still had a 3:20 advantage. Their break came to an end, however, 11 kilometres from the finish in Bodrum. Once the break was caught, Markus Fothen (Team Milram) attacked but his effort was neutralized by the peloton. Emmanuele Bindi (Lampre) attacked on the downhill with two kilometres to go but he was caught by the sprinters in the final kilometre. André Schulze (PSK Whirlpool) took the lead with 100 metres to go and crossed the line in first position. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Jean-Francois Quenet
