Petacchi returns on home soil with win

Italian Alessandro Petacchi, 34, wins the Memorial Viviana Manservisi – his first race on home soil since his suspension

Alessandro Petacchi of Team LPR Brakes returned with a win in the Memorial Viviana Manservisi – his first race on home soil since his suspension for Salbutamol, on May 6. The 34 year-old Italian from La Spezia bettered CSF Group's Maximiliano Richeze and NGC Medical's Enrico Rossi in the bunch kick to the finish line in Comacchio, Ferrara.

The 192.2-kilometre race started in Sant'Agostino and shortly after, kilometre 18, a move of three formed. Ukrainian Vladimir Duma (Ceramica Flaminia-Bossini Docce), Swiss Roger Beuchat (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Androni Giocattoli) and Russian Vladislav Borisov (Amore & Vita-McDonald's) gained 5:40 by kilometre 80. The worked of Petacchi's LPR Brakes team saw the gap closed by kilometre 169.

"I am coming off a long period of rest. Definitely, I am fresh and also very content with ASO's Paris-Tours invitation," said Petacchi, according to a team press release. "I wanted to understand how I am going following the cold I had in Britain and a week on antibiotics."

Petacchi will lead Team LPR Brakes in the sprinters' classics, Paris-Tours, this October 12. He won the French race last year. (GB)
