Clarke delivers for Praties

William Clarke delivered his Praties team the biggest win of the season, outsprinting the reminisce of an early break, which formed after just ten kilometers of racing to take the Goulburn to Citi. Michael England took second ahead of Chris Jory who animated the race in its dying stages with a number of attacks which earned him the king of the mountains prize.
Clarke was part of the early break which included his Praties Cycling teammate, Ben Mather, Jory (Panasonic - NSWIS), England (Budget forklifts), Ben King (South Australia.com - AIS) and Jonathan Lovelock (Jayco/VIS). The group built up a seven minute lead at one point and was never threatened by the main field, which finished over five minutes down on the leaders.
As the break came to the main climb of the day, which comes with just 20 kilometers remaining, Jory attacked the lead group and held a small margin as he crested the KOM climb. The attack caused the lead group to splinter as they did all they could to pull him back.
Storming down the fast descent as they headed into Camden, Jory was caught by Lovelock, England and Clarke who were keen to keep the pace high. Mather showed his extraordinary descending skills as he bridged to the three leaders, moving directly to the front to keep the pace high for his team-mate, Clarke.
The tactic paid off. As the quintet came into the final kilometer, Mather increased the pace with Clarke on his wheel. Then with 200 meters remaining Clarke began his sprint with England following closely. As the pair threw for the line, Clarke was just able to edge out England for the win. Jory crossed in third unable to match the speed of the sprint after his numerous break-away attempts.

- The only downfall of riding a main highway in Australia are the large trucks, but the police had it under control.
- Oenone Wood used her size to her advantage & hide in the bunch very well.
- Darren Cash (Sutherland) NSW Road Champion was unlucky to miss the vital break which went away at 12km into the race.
- Brendan Jones (MACE/Rock & Dirt team) on the comeback trail & riding into some form after taking some time off after the 2007 season.
- Colin Grimes (Hillbrick/Macarthur) pushing it on one of the many rolling hills on the Hume Highway.
- Andrew Riordan (KOM Cyclery/Northern Suburbs) letting his fellow riders know he has suffered a mechanical mishap.
- The riders got to enjoy some of the nice rolling hills of the Southern Highlands.
- When the main breakaway started there was no messing about , check that speed on a downhill section of the Hume Highway.
- William Clarke (Praties) coming through to keep the pace up, you can just see the bunch in the distance.
- Chris Jory (FRF-Panasonic) was very prominent in the break, always willing to lift the pace to stay away.
- Coming into Maurlan the main bunch were only a couple of hundred metres to the break, but this is a close as they got.
- Bradley Mills (Citi-Velofix) tried chasing many times but nothing stuck.
- Cameron Hughes (Budget Forklifts) stayed with the bunch, is this a sign for next weeks Grafton.
- Jonathan Lovelock (Jayco-VIS) did his fair share of work in the break, finishing in 4th place.
- Ben Mather (Praties) helped William Clarke pull off a fantastic win.
- William Clarke wired for sound.
- The main break had no time to stop for Maccas at Sutton Forest.....
- The main bunch were already 5 minutes down at this stage..
- SBS were on hand filming the Goulburn.
- Nathan Page (KOM Cyclery/Northern Suburbs) & Luis Trueba (Hillbrick/Macarthur) rode well in the main break to help keep the pack from catching.
- The dreaded feed zone , not a place for the faint hearted.
- The main pack coming into Yerrinbooral.
- Ben King (South Australia.com-AIS) found the going tough up the Razorback climb, loosing contact up the final ascent.
- Chris Jory tried his luck , attacking his breakaway companions near the KOM.
- Unfortunately Chris was brought back on the descent.
- The final started early & was a closely contested.
- with William Clarke (Praties) only just edging out Michael England (Team Budget Forklifts) on the line.
