Benítez sprints to leadership

Benfica's Javier Benítez won the first stage of the Vuelta a Chihuahua and received the leader's jersey from the hands of the chief organiser, Ricardo Creel Ryan. Benítez won the mass sprint. ahead of German Steffen Radochla (Elk Haus). Third was Mexican Juan Pablo Magallanes (Tecos Trek). The stage over 147.8 kilometres from the capital Chihuahua to Camargo was marked by various breakaway intents. The last one was chased down five kilometres before the finish line.

A very happy Javier Benítez recapped the final sprint. "It was a very fast, nervous stage. I am lucky to have a magnificent team, they did a super job. I don't know if I will be able to defend the yellow jersey. Three weeks ago I won the last stage and the overall classification of the Vuelta a Portugal, and it was a difficult stage."

Benítez was impressed with the third edition of the race, in which he himself participated for the first time. "I also have to praise the organisation, this race is perfectly organised, with a lot of security measures and an enthusiastic public. It's the first time I participate here, but I already want to come back again."

The race was marked by the comeback of 44-year-old Raúl Alcalá. The Mexican finished the race in 52nd place. Alcalá won the young rider competition in 1985 in the Tour de France and finished 11th in the 1984 Olympic road race in Los Angeles.

At ten o'clock in the morning, the third edition of the Vuelta a Chihuahua was started near to the government building in the capital of the state. Sun and a blue sky accompanied the 123 riders on their way to Camargo, passing by the nut plantings of Delicias. The first serious breakaway began at kilometre 19. The Canadian Buck Miller (Race Pro), the Spaniard Ezequiel Mosquera (Xacobeo Galicia), who finished fourth in this year's Vuelta a España and the Italian Derik Zampedri (NGC Medical) decided to unite with the Mexicans Juan Pablo Magallanes (Tecos Trek), Cesar Vaquera (Orven) and Canels Turbo's Antonio Aldape and David Salomón.

The first intermediate sprint in Tomás García saw Magallanes in front of Salomón and Aldape. The only difficulty of the day was a mountain classification of the fourth category after 36.6 kilometres, won by David Salomon (Canels Turbo) ahead of Cesar Vaquera (Orven), Juan Pablo Magallanes (Tecos Trek) and Antonio Aldape (Canels Turbo). A few kilometres later, the escape group was chased down by the peloton.

The second intermediate sprint in Colonia Lazaro Cadenas was won by the Italian Diego Nossoti (NGC Medical) ahead of the Mexican Uriel Rayo (Code Jalisco) and the Portuguese Andre Cardoso (Fercase).

The largest breakaway intent was ridden five kilometres later by the German Björn Thurau from the team Elk Haus. He led the race for eighty kilometres, followed by Ismael Ponce from the team Code Jalisco, Uriel Chávez from San Marcos and Orven's Edgar Barragan. The last 30 kilometres of the stage were an only up – and downhill ride. The sun and the heat made it very difficult for Thurau to stay in front, so that he was chased down 16 kilometres before the finish line.

The team Benfica worked well to place their fastest man in front, and they were successful. The public in Camargo saw a very exciting sprint, where the Spaniard was able to win.
