12th Tour of Japan - 2.2Japan, May 18-25, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - May 21: Shimohisakata circuit race, 155.3kmClarke takes third stage victory for AustraliaBy Miwako Sasaki SouthAustralia.com-AIS's Simon Clarke took the 4th stage of the Tour of Japan in Miniami Shinshu over a hilly circuit ahead of Japanese champion Yukiya Arashiro (Meitan Hompo-GDR). The U23 Australian champion was too strong for Arashiro nad team-mate Cameron Meyer in the sprint to the line. Overnight leader Wesley Sulzberger (South Australia.com-AIS) finished fifth on the stage to hold on to his overall lead by just one second to Meyer. "It was basically five kilometres up, five kilometres down and two kilometres across," said Clarke. "It was bloody hard and everyone was so tired at the finish it was more of a grovel for the finish line than a sprint. "I stayed away over the top of the climb, but with about five kilometres to go I got caught by a group of around a dozen riders, including Wes (Sulzberger) and Cam (Meyer). That gave us the manpower to go with all the last ditch attacks and in the end I managed to score the win." Team Director Brian Stephens said the aim today was to defend the positions of Sulzberger and Meyer by going on the attack and that tactic paid off for Clarke at the finish. "Simon didn't have to do any work in the break because he was protecting our lead," said Stephens. "That meant he had pretty fresh legs at the end when the break had been caught and could go for the win." How it unfolded90 riders started from Iida station in Minami Shinshu under clear skies. At 10 laps to go, Japanese rider Takashi Miyazawa, a stage winner last year, attacked from the peloton quickly building a 30 second advantage. He was joined by Clarke, Maxim Gourov (A-Style Somn), Vincenzo Garofalo (Nippo-Endeka), Yoshiyiki Abe (Skil-Shimano) and the blue point jersey Taiji Nishitani (Aisan Racing Team) with nine laps to go. With three laps remaining the gap from the leaders to the peloton was still hovering at one minute. Garofalo accelerated on the climb with Clarke the only one able to follow. The two leaders had an advantage of 1'30 back to the chase group, but as they began the final lap, only Clarke was able to maintain the pace, leading the race alone. The chase group of 11 riders, including race leader Sulzberger, finally caught Clarke during the final lap. After leaving the hilly circuit for the flat finale mountain's leader, Arashiro attacked the group with one kilometre to go, but Clarke was stuck to his wheel like glue and easily passed him to take the stage. Tour of Japan has a transfer day tomorrow and the rider will try to the individual mountain time trial of 11.4 km in Mount Fuji on Friday. The average of the gradient is 10.5 %.
