Rock Racing's Oscar Sevilla slipped from the top of the leaderboard on the final stage of the San Dimas stage race, losing the overall classification to Canadian champion Cameron Evans (Symmetrics) by just one second. Evans slipped off the front of the peloton in the criterium with eventual stage winner Luis Amaran (Colavita/Sutter Home p/b Cooking Light) to gain a total time of thirty-eight seconds, enough to knock Sevilla down to second overall. Third place in the overall was taken over by Ben Day (Toyota-Untied) who captured the first time bonus sprint for ten seconds.

The winning breakaway riders played a tactical game on the final lap to decide the stage victory, but after the close sprint Amaran emerged as the winner of the stage while Evans claimed the overall race victory. Emile Abraham (Team Type 1) won the field sprint for third place.

"It's certainly a good feeling to have won San Dimas especially because Sevilla is obviously a great bike rider," said Evans who acknowledged that this was his first career stage race win. "With half a lap to go I was thinking about the stage win and the overall. I didn't want to get my hopes up too much and I was a little bit stressed."

Evans admitted that his breakaway goals were centered around collecting time bonus sprints to move further ahead in GC, but he did not anticipate gaining so much time on the peloton, given that Rock Racing had controlled the previous day's race to protect Sevilla's lead.

"I was kind of going into today thinking that the best way to get time back was to go for some bonuses, which is why I started a break," said a delighted Evans. "Amaran ended up being very strong and we worked well together. With fifteen minutes to go, I knew we were going to stay away. Although I was thinking about the finish of the criterium, I was also thinking more about moving up on GC, but I didn't think about actually getting the overall win so it worked out alright."

Evans initiated an attack after the first time bonus won by Day, who subsequently moved into second place, just nine seconds behind Sevilla on the GC. Day noted that his intention was to win the second time bonus as well and gain the additional seconds needed to win the overall. However, Evans, Amaran and Chris Jones (Team Type 1) rolled up the road, taking the additional bonuses on route.

"Evans started the break and Jones and I bridged across to him," said the race winner from Cuba, Amaran. "We were all working well together until Jones didn't have too much left in his legs and I attacked at that point because he wasn't working well in the break anymore. He was ahead of me in the overall, so I didn't want him sitting on."

"We are very happy to have two stage wins in San Dimas, we won in a field sprint yesterday and we won in a break away today," said Amaran. "I think that shows that the level of our team is well balanced. The primary goal was to win the stage and if I could move into a podium on GC than that would be a very good situation," Amaran continued. "When I was in the break I knew that Evans was twenty seconds ahead of me on the GC and that he wanted the time bonuses, too. Evans beat me in the bonuses so I had to be a little bit more tactical in the final sprint and make sure that I started the sprint from behind him. I pulled through the uphill and then Evans took the front on the downhill into the last corner."

According to Rock Racing director Mariano Fredick having the three riders up the road was a perfect tactical situation for them in order to protect Sevilla's lead from Toyota-United's Ben Day who otherwise would have been on the hunt for the second time bonus. However, his worry began when the separation grew from thirty seconds to one minute.

"Our idea was to let a small break go and then to set tempo at the front," said Fredick who's team gathered on the front to reduce the time gap with help in the final laps from team's Jittery Joe's, Kelly Benefit Strategies and Successful Living who were setting up for a field sprint. "We knew it would be aggressive at the beginning and interesting things were happening in the first part of the race. Once Ben Day got the first time bonus and Sevilla got third we still thought it was an okay situation and that Sevilla was able to be there mixing it up."

"The break started out to be good but I think our team relaxed a little too much and we take full responsibility for that," Fredick said truthfully. "Once the gap grew to a minute we got worried and started to chase it back, but we came up short at the end and we were a little bit gassed. So it came down to a really close race - just one second."

Toyota-United director Len Pettyjohn attributed Rock Racing's unforeseen loss to a "classic case of American style racing where teams get so myopically focused on one team that they forget to race, forget to race against other guys and forget to defend their jersey."

Pettyjohn continued by stating, "They [Rock Racing] were so focused on our riders that they let two guys go up the road that were forty seconds back on GC – The problem was that they let it go to a minute. It was a surprise for us to watch a team with quality riders and twelve riders throw the race away.

Third place on the day Emile Abraham noted his contentment with the outcome of the race in having one rider, Chris Jones, represented in the initial break and then a field sprint victory. "Ben and Shawn worked tremendously for me, to keep me calm, relaxed and in good position," said Abraham who went on to describe the field sprint. "Successful Living had a lead out going too but they crashed on backside of the course and we were able to go around that on the inside. I felt great today and I'm happy to have won the field sprint for third."

Anderson triumphs in San Dimas

Team High Road's women continued to dominate in San Dimas, with Kim Anderson and Alexis Rhodes breaking away for the second stage in a row in the criterium, ending the aggressive race with a stage victory for Rhodes followed by Anderson. Emilia Fahlin took the field sprint for third place ahead of Laura Kroepsch (Value Act Capital).

The High Road women have proved to be on good form heading into the Redlands Classic and the upcoming Fleche-Wallonne World Cup. The German-based team swept the podiums in two of three stages and the overall with Kim Anderson followed by Alexis Rhodes and Mara Abbott. Anderson also claimed the QOM jersey with Rhodes bringing home the green sprinter's jersey.

Anderson noted that she enjoyed seeing the new faces in American stage racing after competing in Europe for much of her career. "I think there weren't as many full teams here," said Anderson regarding her team's ability to gain time of the field this weekend. "But it was great to come here and see all the young girls racing and all the new faces of American cycling. I had such a good time."

"I wanted to help a few of the teams yesterday during parts of the races, to give them pointers on how to be more involved in the race and for them to have fun. I really enjoy watching the up and coming girls. I think sometimes the girls can be intimidated by our team, sometimes they come with us in breaks, but I think it's still intimidating."

Anderson initiated the break away twenty-minutes into the fifty-five minute event and soon after joined by her team-mate Rhodes and Taitt Sato (Value Act Capital) and one other rider. The four gained time on the field but to Anderson and Rhode's surprise, the two additional riders were off the back over the climb on the backside of the circuit.

"There was four of us together today," said Anderson who elaborated on the break away. "Alex brought two riders up which was great. Alex is a very strong rider and went hard over the climb, which wasn't really a climb but it felt like one. I think she went a little bit too hard because we looked back and they weren't there and that was not our intention. Alex gets so excited, and she is such a good crit rider that she was breaking my legs too. We in no way wanted it to look like we wanted to be solo, on our own and without other teams. I think I'm disappointed with how today went just for that reason."

Double stage winner and second on GC Rhodes commented on her victory as a sign of good faith in her team-mate Anderson. "She gave me the win today," said Rhodes who half jokingly claimed that her best contribution to the team is picking up water bottles for them during the races over in Europe. "Which I'm thankful for because I had the win yesterday, too. Our team rode really well today to have Emilia take third place and overall. It was a very good week. We've got Redlands coming up and Kim and Mara are going very well at the moment. We hope to gain some good form for Europe as well."

With three laps to go, Value Act Capital brought their sprinter Lara Kroepsch to the front of the field in safe position for a field sprint. "It was a hard race, it was a fast crit," Kroepsch said. "Taitt made the break and unfortunately fell out of it, and I elected to have the girls follow wheels instead of chase because we were getting attacked a lot."

"We tried a couple of times to get across but we just couldn't do it. The speeds were high the whole race and it was aggressive. I knew in the finish the girls were tired. I asked them to bring me to Emilia's wheel in the final corner, which worked out great but I couldn't quite get around her at the finish. But with all the work today, Ill take a fourth place."
