San Dimas Stage Race - NEUSA, March 28-30, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Next Stage Stage 1 - March 28: Glendora Time Trial, 3.8 milesAn expected victory in GlendoraBy Kirsten Robbins in Glendora, California The ninth annual San Dimas Stage Race kicked off this morning with a twisty 3.8-mile hilltop time trial no Glendora Mountain, gaining an elevation of 1375 feet. Oscar Sevilla (Rock Racing) did not disappoint his fans when he stormed to the top in a time of 13:05, nearly eight seconds ahead of Peter Stetina (VMG/Felt/RGM) and 16 seconds quicker than Ben Day (Toyota-United). "I was very nervous before the start, but I was motivated to do well today," said the Spaniard, who traveled from Madrid to Los Angeles on Tuesday. "I haven't been able to race in so long that I had a lot of butterflies. Last week I was feeling pretty good but with all the traveling, I didn't know if I would have my racing legs today." The 140 men rolled one-by-one to their starting time slots under sunshine and moderate winds that made for perfect weather conditions to start the three-day event. Teams Rock Racing, Toyota-United, Symmetrics, Colavita/Sutter Home, Team Type 1, Bissell, Health Net and Jittery Joes brought their top-notch squads to San Dimas to test their legs over the well-known road up to Mt. Glendora. Sevilla's blistering time trial was relatively slower than expected of him, due to a mechanical half way up the climb when his chain jammed into his rear cassette causing the wheel to lock up. Sevilla's finishing time was significantly increased because he had to dismount his machine to correct the problem. While Sevilla may have started the event as the obvious race favourite, second placed on the day Stetina put forth a commanding effort to maintain only an eight second difference to the winning time. The race winner's team-mate Tyler Hamilton was pleased to be returning to competition on American soil, noting his excitement in looking forward to events that started his cycling career as a young rider. "I don't feel so hot but I'm excited to be racing here and get into shape," said Hamilton, who finished 23rd. "For me it is great to get some races in my legs and for some of these races I'll be doing this year, its like going back in time - like a full circle. "We have a great team here and Sevilla is riding really well right now," he added. "We can expect to have some good sprint finishes, especially in the criterium on Sunday." The many well-rounded teams registered in San Dimas may have the opportunity to reshuffle the general classification during Stage 2's 84 four mile road race. Furthermore, there will be a certain opportunity for sprinters and breakaway riders to shine in pursuit of a stage victory. KOM point and sprint will be available on alternating laps. Abbott takes first season winCurrent US National Road Champion Mara Abbott (High Road) took top honors up the Glendora Mountain's 3.8-mile time trial in a time of 15:27. Abbott was 45 second ahead of her team-mate Kimberly Anderson and one minute and four seconds ahead of Leah Goldstein (Value Act Capital). "The course was really fun today," said Abbott, who didn't have the opportunity to pre ride the climb. "I really wasn't sure what to expect. But it was an absolutely gorgeous hill. "It was a nice road and good switchbacks and got to see a nice view coming back down," she added. "There was no weak points about the course at all I really enjoyed it today." According the young national champion she felt comfortable and strong in her early season fitness and performance. "Of course it wasn't comfortable while I was riding," admitted Abbott, who does not consider this event a warm up to her season. "I'm taking each race at a time so Redlands is Redlands and San Dimas is San Dimas and I'm focusing on each race one at a time," she explained. "I might go to race in Europe this spring, I have more flexibility with out school because I'm taking the rest of my credits remote, online and one class in the fall." The Glendora Mountain time trial has set the general classification stage going into Stage 2's 58 mile road race, held on a seven mile circuit. Points in the KOM and sprint competition will be had on alternating laps throughout the event.
