Fernandez de Larrea wins final sprint
Valverde takes home overall

Basque racer Koldo Fernandez de Larrea won the sprint at the end of the final stage of the Vuelta a Murcia on Saturday ahead of Graeme Brown (Rabobank) and Juan José Haedo (Team CSC). Caisse d'Epargne's Alejandro Valverde kept his overall leader's jersey and won the final general classification. Stefano Garzelli (Acqua Sapone - Caffe Mokambo) and Alberto Contador (Astana) finished second and third in the general classification.
Valverde's team manager was happy with the winner's performance as well as that of his team. "One more time, Alejandro Valverde showed that we can always rely on him in the most important stages," said José Luis Jaimerena. "In stage two, the most difficult, he was ahead and the only problem was that he had no team-mate in the front group to help him control the race so that he could attack in the final climb."
"Yesterday in the time trial, without making big differences, he was able to control the situation, which gave him the possibility to win both the stage and the overall classification. I am also satisfied because the entire Caisse d'Epargne team did a very good job in this Vuelta a Murcia and today, in the last stage, they were very attentive 'til the end to ensure victory."

Team CSC director Frost commented on Haedo's third place in the final stage. "We tried our best for JJ, but were beaten in the sprint. All in all it's been a good week for us. After the victory in Almeria we took a great one here and Carlos [Sastre] and Inigo [Cuesta] both did really well in the time trial. This race was the first tough job for many after our training camp and with that in mind we're fully satisfied."
The Astana Cycling team under directors Alain Gallopin and Alexandr Shefer won the team classification by 1'04" over Acqua e Sapone and 1'32" over Caisse d'Epargne. They placed three riders in the top ten.
"We proved again that we are a strong team. We all worked for the same goal and, with Chechu Rubiera, we won the queen stage in this Tour of Murcia," said Gallopin, who was generally satisfied with the race. "However, I am convinced that Alberto Contador could have won the time trial on Saturday, and consequently the overall classification, if we were correctly informed about Valverde's intermediate time. It seems we were given the wrong time. Anyway, we are motivated for the next races. There are still enough challenges this year."
Contador agreed with his team director. "Maybe my preparation was not ideal. After the ASO decision not to allow us in their races, I was out a few days and my training suffered from it. Maybe then, I missed the few percent that failed me in the decisive time trial. My own fault, but the season is still long."
