Tour of Pennsylvania - 2.2USA, June 24-29, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 6 - June 29: Pittsburgh criteriumTornado warnings neutralize final stage, Veilleux claims overallBy Kirsten Robbins in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Under dangerously wet conditions American national criterium champion Daniel Holloway (VMG-Racing) proved why he holds the title as he won the closing criterium. Holloway out sprinted Canadian Keven Lacombe (Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast) and Eric Barlevav (Team Time Pro) to claim the final stage win. "I love racing in the rain and our guys were so motivated at the start that stopping would have just lowered our morale," said Holloway, regarding the official's decision to neutralize and restart the event due to heavy rain and tornado warnings. "All the guys wanted to race and that just made me even more motivated. They believed in me and to me they are the ones who won tonight." Due to the dangerous conditions, race officials decided to exclude the stage from the overall classification and furthermore donate the prize money to local charity. Canadian David Veilleux showed an outstanding week-long performance which saw him sew up the yellow leader's jersey. The Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast rider claimed a 12 seconds victory over South African Christoff Van Heerden (Konica Minolta) and was 18 seconds ahead of American Stefano Barberi (Z-Team), who took third place. "I'm sorry for the outcome of the race tonight," said Veilleux, who also won the best sprinter's green jersey. "But, it means a lot to me to win these jerseys here at the Tour of Pennsylvania. I think I would not have been able to do this without my teammates helping me and all of our strategy that took place." Second place in the overall Van Heerden lead the event for two stages before succumbing to Veilleux and team-mate LaCombe's penultimate stage attack. "I don't understand why the officials stopped the race and then had us continue in the same conditions a few minutes later - I think it changed the race," said Van Heerden. "I think the top three places on general classification probably would not have changed much, but it still changed the criterium." VMG-Felt showed its presence on the final podium, with Peter Stetina's outstanding performance over the Allegheny Mountains earning him the overall mountains classification. Furthermore, the youngest of the young, 19 year-old Peter Salon claimed the Best Young Rider jersey. How it unfoldedThe culmination of the inaugural Tour of Pennsylvania ended with heavy rain during the 80.5 kilometre, classic criterium in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh on a 2.4 kilometre circuit. Starting and ending on Boulevard of the Allies and Stanwix, the four-corner style course with a slight rise in part of the route and the NASCAR-type race offered great viewing at all points around the course. After just six laps and a 40 rider crash, the criterium came to a screeching halt when rain and tornado warnings forced officials to neutralize the race, deeming it unsafe to continue. Upon further review of the weather radar, a combination of officials, team directors and riders agreed to continue a shortened criterium without counting it against the finale general classification. "We still wanted to race well here for a field sprint even though it didn't count," said LaCombe. "I think it was important for us to continue racing even though we were given the option not to because we are in the leaders jersey and there is no reason not to race." The riders lined up to restart the event with 18 laps remaining, where VMG-Felt team proved it meant business. The team again put on a good show for the crowds while controlling the front of the dwindled peloton for the last half of the race, despite receiving attacks from several of other teams. With only 30 riders remaining in the front group, Team Race animated the last three laps. The squad sent riders off the front one after another, disrupting VMG-Felt's lengthy lead out. VMG-Felt regained control on the final three laps, with Kelley Benefit Strategies-Medifast and TIME Pro Cycling sitting close behind. A second significant accident occurred on the slippery pave section on the backside of the circuit that did not affect the front 15 riders. "I was sitting in mixed up with VMG-Felt and Kelly," said Barlevav, who recently won the Harlem criterium. "It was really sketchy coming out of the lat turn and I lost some of my line at that point. But, the sprint started and I came in just behind Holloway and LaCombe." PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Scott Schaffrick
