Basque win in Euskal Bizikleta

Basque sprinter Koldo Fernández de Larrea (Euskaltel - Euskadi) won the second stage of the Euskal Bizikleta starting and finishing in Agurain, Spain. The 26 year-old beat Australian Baden Cooke (Barloworld) and the Spaniard José Joaquín Rojas (Caisse d'Epargne) in a final bunch sprint while Contentpolis Murcia's Julián Sánchez held onto his race lead.
The 162.7km stage through the south of the Basque province of Alava was marked by a breakaway which included Ricardo Serrano (Tinkoff), José Alberto Benítez (Saunier Duval), Francisco José Martínez (Andalucía Cajasur), Alexander Arekeev (Acqua e Sapone) and Oscar Pujol (Burgos Monumental). The break was chased down by the sprinters teams, Barloworld and Euskaltel - Euskadi with 15km remaining in the race after Contentpolis Murcia kept the leaders in check for most of the race. A number of riders attempted to escape the peloton during the final 15km, however no on was able to build any substantial gaps.
"After the bad day yesterday, I had to try," Serrano said of his break away attempt today. "We had little chance to reach the finish line. The hardest factor today was the wind. Tomorrow, I will try again," the persistent 29 year-old explained.
"The finish was crazy," said an overjoyed Fernández de Larrea. "In the last roundabouts, we lost contact to the peloton! 500 meters before the finish line, I was really behind the other sprinters, then another rider crossed [in front of] me. I already thought that the win had eluded me, but in the end, I was the lucky winner. I have to thank my team; they did a great work today."
How it unfolded
A sunny, but windy and cold day awaited 97 starters in the picturesque town of Agurain. The first difficulty of the day was the first category Alto de Opakua climb. Ricardo Serrano used the climb as a launch pad to make his move. Initially on his own, he was caught by a group including mountains classification leader Eros Capecchi (Saunier Duval), his team-mate Walter Pedraza, Iban Mayoz (Karpin Galicia), Adrián Palomares (Contentpolis Murcia) and Jorge Azanza (Euskaltel Euskadi).
With 20km covered the early escape was reeled back in by a determined peloton.

It took just five kilometres before Serrano again escaped. This time José Alberto Benítez (Saunier Duval), Alexander Arekeev (Acqua e Sapone), Francisco José Martínez (Andalucia Cajasur) and Oscar Pujol (Burgos Monumenta) joined the Russian. As the break began the third category Alto de Azazeta climb, their lead had crept up to 4.08 minutes.Martínez was the first to cross the summit of this mountain ahead of Serrano. The quintet went on increasing its lead, having a maximum lead of 5.47 after 78 kilometers or racing.
Benítez won the sprint into Durana ahead of Martínez and Serrano.
Back in the peloton, Euskaltel Euskadi and Contentpolis Murcia moved to the front and began to seriously chase the leaders. Oscar Pujol was unable to keep pace with his three break away companions and was re-absorbed by the peloton just after the first passage of Agurain.
The gap was being decreasing rapidly from the efforts of Euskaltel Euskadi and Contentpolis Murcia as Benítez won the second sprint of the day into Guereñu. Second went to Martínez and third to Serrano.
As they raced through Agurain for the second time, the four man break had a 2.28 over the fast moving peloton. Caisse d'Epargne took over the chase and with 15km to go the break was caught. A flurry of attacks came in the final 10km to the line. First Iban Mayoz (Karpin Galicia) tried his luck, and when he was unsuccessful his team-mate Eduard Vorganov tried his luck before being swamped by the sprinters teams.
Fernández de Larrea was a happy winner in his home province, giving his team their fourth victory of the season.
Stage 3 - June 8: Eibar - Arrate (Eibar), 150.7km
Sunday's third and last stage from Eibar to the Santuary of Arrate runs over 150.7 kilometres and will surely be the decisive stage. Four mountains - one third category, one second category and two first category climbs - should see the peloton splinter into many smaller groups. .
