Moreno wins first stage, but Sánchez leads race
Stage winner handed penalty

Spaniard Dani Moreno (Caisse d'Epargne) won the first stage of the Euskal Bizikleta from Bakio to Bakio over 154.5 kilometers. The 26 year-old outpaced a small group including Contentpolis Murcia's Julián Sánchez Pimienta, and Italian Giampaolo Caruso (Ceramice Flaminia) to win the opening stage.
One hour after the stage, judges decided to punish Moreno with a time penalty of 10 seconds for holding onto a vehicle on the ascent of Alto de Sollube. The penalty left Sánchez Pimienta at the leader of the race.
"I defend myself quite well in little groups," said Moreno. "Igor Antón was very strong, and I started to sprint a bit too early, but in the end I could overbear the others. My team did a great job, Luis León Sánchez, José Joaquín Rojas, Imanol Erviti and I were present in all the breakaway groups.
"The race was very nervous, every team is trying to escape and everybody rides like crazy. But now, we will try to defend this jersey," he added, before being informed of the penalty.
Imanol Erviti (Caisse d'Epargne), Hubert Krys (Ceramica Flaminia), Igor Romero (Orbea Oreka) and Pedro Gutierrez (Burgos Monumental) were also handed the same punishment as Moreno for the same offence.

Bizkaia was the first province to welcome the Euskal Bizikleta, with the 104 riders from 13 teams starting from the little fishing village of Bakio. While rain was originally predicted, the race started in clear conditions offering the peloton an unspoilt view over the Atlantic, as it followed the route towards Gernika.
The peloton had to climb a tough mountain just a few kilometres into the race where Héctor González (Saunier Duval) escaped to win the race's first mountain classification points. A few kilometres later a group of 14 riders tried to escape, including stage winner Moreno, Amets Txurruka (Euskaltel Euskadi), John Lee Augustyn (Barloworld) and Adrián Palomares (Contentpolis Murcia), but the peloton wouldn't let them get away.
Moreno won the Meta Volante sprint in Gernika as the race reached the 22.5 kilometre mark. The peloton controlled the race until kilometre 65 when 15 riders, including Luis León Sánchez (Caisse d'Epargne), Iban Mayoz (Karpin Galicia) and Augustyn, pulled out a small margin over the peloton. Ignacio Sarabia (Extremadura) won the Meta Volante sprint in Aulesti.

The peloton, lead by Tinkoff Credit Systems and Euskaltel Euskadi, controlled the margin to the group well, not allowing it pull out more than 1.15 minutes. Jesús Ramírez (Extremadura) won the second category mountain classification climb on top of the Balcon of Bizkaia after 82.9 kilometre.
Four riders crashed in the peloton at kilometre 107, with Contentpolis Murcia's Alberto Rodríguez and Orbea's Daniel Sesma being taken to hospital after the incident. The peloton had to climb again o the top of the Alto de Gaztelugatxe after the first pass of Bakio. After taking out the next mountains classification climb Saunier Duval's Eros Capecchi took his chance and escaped.
The last circuit of 30 kilometres took the peloton over the Alto de Sollube, where Capecchi was able defend his advantage of 13 seconds. Contentpolis Murcia's Adrián Palomares was in second place while Extremadura's Jaume Rovira was a further three seconds behind.
A chasing group reached the young Italian just 10 kilometres from the finish line, and Moreno was able to win the stage in the sprint.
Tomorrow's second stage will visit the province of Álava. The stage has only two mountain climbs, the Alto de Opakua (category one) and the alto de Azazeta (category three). Altogether the riders will cover 162.7 kilometres on the run from Agurain to Agurain.
