Cox Charities Cycling Classic - NEProvidence, Rhode Island, USA, June 28, 2008Wamsley scores another Colavita winBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor The Colavita-Sutter Home team has been quietly racking up the wins on the NRC calendar this season, evident by the team's third place on the overall standings. The trend continued Saturday at the Cox Charities Cycling Classic in Providence, Rhode Island where Kyle Wamsley out-sprinted two other break riders to add another NRC win to the team's tally. "We got away with around 17 laps to go," Wamsley told Cyclingnews. "There was a big 12 man break and just as it was getting caught we bridged up together. The other two in the break were Bissell's Garrett Peltonen and CRCA/Empire's Matthew Johnson. A short but decisive climb, combined with a headwind along the river front each lap meant that there was no place to hide for any break. "It was a perfect big ring hill," Wamsley added. "It wasn't too hard but it was good to make the race hard, because people were killing themselves early on in the race." "We never had more than 30 seconds so we had to keep drilling it," Wamsley continued. One of the other NRC teams represented in the race was Toyota-United with big guns such as Dominque Rollin Ivan Stevic, Henk Vogels and Jonny Clarke - but what they had in firepower they lacked in numbers, unable to bring the motivated counterattack back in time. On the final lap it was Peltonen to make the first move, knowing that he would not be able to best Wamsley in a sprint. "Kyle is obviously hard to beat - a good sprinter and hard to shake on that course," he said. "I rode hard up the climb on the last lap, but [Johnson] got gapped and since Kyle didn't want to pull through I was stuck on the front." Wamsley played his tactical card, making Johnson either do the chasing or give away the race. "When he got a gap on him and I just shook my head since I was the fastest sprinter in the group, so he drilled it and we caught him with 300 meters to go and neither of them had anything left." Peltonen held on for second place, but understandably would have rather won. "It was good racing otherwise, but you always want to win," he said." It was my first time in Providence and there were a good amount of people out there." Both Colavita-Sutter Home and Bissell said they are now heading up to Fitchburg for the next NRC stage race next week. Wamsley said that he hopes his team's the climb up the NRC standings will open doors to some of the bigger late-season races, especially since the team was not chosen for races such as Tour of California or the Tour de Georgia. "We have some good legs going into Fitchburg - we need some good stage race win," he said. "Tyler [Wren] is going well and it's a good opportunity for us. It won't hurt us for getting invited to Colorado, Utah and Missouri."
