Arndt takes Thüringen lead

German cyclist Judith Arndt (Team Columbia) looks set to claim her second consecutive Internationale Thüringen-Rundfahrt der Frauen victory after moving into the lead on the penultimate stage. Arndt entered Saturday's time trial with a three second deficit to Grete Treier (Gauss RDZ Ormu), but holds a 22 second lead over Trixi Worrack (Equipe Nürnberger Versicherung) after the time trial shake out.

Swiss rider Karin Thürig (Cervelo Lifeforce) claimed victory on the penultimate stage over team-mate Christiane Soeder. Arndt took the third step on the stage podium.

"I'm very happy with my time trial," explained Arndt. "I'm glad we were able to put some time into the Cervelo Time Trialists in yesterdays stage, but I expect them to be very aggressive tomorrow so we will have a lot of work do to."

The race concludes tomorrow with the 127.6 km stage in Zeulenroda, where Arndt hopes to defend her title. The German rider, from the strong Columbia squad, won last year's event on the final stage by a single second, but will start this year's finale with a comfortable lead.

"It's been very hard racing as is usual here," said Columbia team director Petra Rossner. "We only have four riders and they are tired but we will fight hard tomorrow to keep the overall lead."

Emma Johansson (Sweden) finished 17th in the time trial, but stays sixth overall.
Trixi Worrack (Equipe Nürnberger Versicherung) was strong in the time trial and goes into the final stage just 22 seconds down on the race leader.
Judith Arndt (Team Columbia) moved into the overall lead thanks to her third place in the time trial.
Greta Trier (RDZ Gauss) was close to Judith Arndt (Team Columbia) on time at the middle of the stage but slipped well back by the finish.

Noemi Cantele (Team Bigla) wore yellow earlier in the tour but is now in 18th place, 2’11” down on Judith Arndt (Team Columbia) despite a seventh place in the time trial.
