49th Fitchburg Longsjo Classic - NEMassachusetts, USA, July 3-6, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - July 4: Wachusett Mountain Road Race, 104/69 miMacGregor climbs to victory; Wamsley takes unexpected leadBy Kirsten Robbins in Princeton, Massachusetts Ian MacGregor (Team Type 1) paid back his hard working team-mates by climbing to victory atop the Mount Wachusett summit ahead of Kyle Wamsley (Colavita/Sutter Home) and Ted King (Bissell). "Shawn Milne was caught with three full laps to go, but because he was off the front all day we were able to sit in and have an easy ride," MacGregor said, happy with victory after his team-mates nearly 100 kilometre break away. "After a slow start yesterday we were really hoping for a stage win today," continued MacGregor who commented on the finale three-kilometer kick to the summit. "I think everyone was pretty fresh coming into the bottom of the climb. I had the help of my team-mates [Chris] Jones and [Jesse] Anthony and just went as hard as I could." Better known for his sprinting, Kyle Wamsley earned himself the overall race lead, when he followed MacGregor to the top for a second place. A tie breaking 5 seconds time bonus bumped Wamsley into the race lead ahead of Justin Spinelli (Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast) and 7 seconds ahead of Ted King (Bissell). "I'm on really good form and really happy, but shocked with how I climbed today," said Wamsley. "When the team works as hard as they did today, you have to dig in and give it everything you got." "I'm psyched to have the leaders jersey after a stage like today," said Wamsley who is looking forward to the flatter stages coming up. "The other two stages are also really good for me - Right up my alley with a circuit race and a crit." How it unfoldedSunshine broke through the morning rain clouds to greet the 140 riders that rolled down the steep descent off of Mount Wachusett. The peloton faced nine laps, totalling 104-mile for the 'queen' stage two. Once inhabited by the Algonquin Indians, the 2,006 foot mountain, which means "The Great Hill" in Algonquin, is currently the highest point in eastern Massachusetts and a popular destination for cycling as well as skiers, hikers and naturalists. The race started with a bang when the 2006 Fitchburg Classic champion Shawn Milne (Team Type 1) and accomplice Stefan Rothe (Marx & Bensdorf/Tristar) slipped off of the front of a subdued field. The escapees broke away during the first lap through the KOM points finish line and gained a maximum of nearly five minutes on the field, predominantly controlled by Colavita/Sutter Home. "Rothe was a big help and was pulling twice as hard as I was for the first two laps," said Milne who found himself out front alone with three laps to go. "But I don't think he paced himself well enough and as he started to slow down I started feeling better." Milne accumulated 150 points over each lap through the KOM sprint, gaining a healthy lead in the points competition. "Our initial goal was to get as many people into a small group as possible, hoping more would follow but that didn't happen," continued Milne. "The gap kept getting bigger and so we decided to go for the points jersey." Health Net-Maxxis riders Tim Johnson and John Murphy highlighted the final lap but were reabsorbed by a fast pace tempo set by Colavita/Sutter Home. "I think the Health Net guys wanted to be aggressive on the last lap for their climber Matt Crane," speculated stage winner Ian MacGregor. "But, Colavita was really motivated and organized, they took control, brought Shawn back and led it into the mountain, they're the ones who made the race happen today." Cheatley takes Wachusett and the overall leadRecently selected for the New Zealand Olympic team, Catherine Cheatley (Cheerwine) used her newfound motivation and her team smarts to out-climb the previous race leader Kristin McGrath (Colavita/Sutter Home) and east coast climbing talent Kathleen Billington (Power Bar). "I feel like I've had a weight lifted off my shoulders," said winner Catherine Cheatley regarding her Beijing selection. "I'm really motivated at the moment to do well. And I wanted to do a good climb because the team did such a good job today." McGrath was forced into second place on the stage and in the overall when Cheerwine let loose a string of attacks that left McGrath and her team-mate Andrea Dvorak to do most of the chasing on the crucial final lap. "A break went with Stacey Marple so my team-mate Andrea Dvorak and I ended up having to do a lot of work to bring her back and I didn't have a whole lot left after that," admitted McGrath, a rider becoming well known for her climbing prowess. "Cheerwine did a great ride, hats off to them," continued McGrath. "I lost the jersey today but we'll try our best to get it back tomorrow." Cheatley was sitting five seconds behind McGrath at the start of the stage but gained enough of an advantage cresting the stage two mountain top finish to take a healthy 19 second overall lead ahead of McGrath, while Billington sits in third place 1'27" back. "We've got great team-mates and different cards to play so we just want to go out there, race our bikes, get some stage wins and hopefully keep the overall." How it unfoldedThe now 2,006 foot Mount Wachusett was said to be as high as 23,000 feet at its peak but was worn down by millennia of wind, water and glacial erosion. It is now considered a remnant of a mountain that once rose high around its surrounding plateau. Some 80 women lined up for stage two's 'queen' stage that routed the peloton around Mount Wachusett for 6 laps, totalling 69 miles, before finishing atop "The Great Hill". Each lap saw a battle between the sprinters at the QOM finish line. Kelly Benjamin (Cheerwine) and Carla Swart (Kenda Tire) tried to out-do one another but ended up tying with 70 points each. Swart will wear the green jersey in tomorrow's stage three circuit race. The women's race was interrupted on several occasions when race officials forced the field to come to a complete stop to allow other competing categories to safely pass. "We weren't too pleased about the last neutralization because the field finally began to split the last time over the climb," Cheatley said regarding a threatening break of seven riders that gained 20 seconds on the field before being asked to stop. "We got a bit angry so we kept countering and did a good job getting up to the top of the hill first," continued Cheatley. A second break that included Nichole Wangsgard (Colavita/Sutter Home), Megan Gaurnier (ProMan) and Stacey Marple (Cheerwine) worked their way up the road headed toward the up hill finish. "Being in a break is what had to be done," said Marple who was sitting in third place on GC and a threat to the race leader, McGrath. "I was just hoping that we were breaking down Colavita. With out numbers that was the smartest thing to do." Courtesy of McGrath, who was forced to chase the threatening break, the dwindled field approached the base of Mountain Wachusett in tact. Third place on the day Kathleen Billington noted the tactics of the top two competing teams and was pleased to have found herself on top of the mountain amongst them. "I was in the field and saw McGrath and Cheatley were up the road together," explained Billington. "I just wanted to ride my own tempo and try to keep the same pace as them even though I was a few meters back. I was really pleased to be able to climb well today and be on the podium here."
