Tour de Vineyards - NENew Zealand, January 2-5, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - January 3: Richmond - Nelson Lakes District, 90 kmRoulston takes stage as classification changes handsBy Malcolm Saunders The heat continued with another sweltering day (stage 2) of action in all four divisions of the Tour de Vineyards. Heath Blackgrove and Jeremy Yates were able to wrangle the overall lead from overnight leader Paul Odlin, while the stage was won by Hayden Roulston over Yates. A ninety strong field lined up for the Senior, U23, U19 90-kilometre race. On tap were included two early sprints, the major hill climb over Spooners Saddle, then onto the rugged Kikawa area for the second hill climb and feed station, all the way climbing to finish into the National Park Lakes District of the Alpine Village of Lake Rotoiti, an altitude 720 metres. The first two sprints at Brightwater and Wakefield resulted in a clean sweep for Hayden Godfrey (Subway), who now heads the Sprint Ace classification with 17 points from Paul Odlin (Star & Garter Tasman), eight points, and Scott Wilder (Benchmark), six points. The warm Nor'wester kicked-in, coming right at the front of the peloton and making life really hard for the riders as they were approaching the four-kilometre long 420m Spooners Hill climb. Hayden Roulston was the first rider to attack, and he held a 50m lead approaching the summit, but a really strong ride by Josh Barley U19 PNP, who seemed to come from nowhere, saw him take the 15 points on offer. The points propelled him into the mountains classification contention for his efforts. The field was spread out during the fast downhill section, with Gordon McCauley leading the attacks and getting away in a break, as the riders approached Korere he was joined by Kieran Hambrook, Joseph Cooper and Greg Scott. Unfortunately, tour leader Paul Odlin punctured just as the chasing bunch were about to catch the break. The hammer went down through the Rainey River uphill grind section, and a break of eight riders went clear as the race approached the Kikawa Incline climb. Jeremy Yates took the ascent and then went clear through the feed-zone with Roulston, Blackgrove and Gordon McCauley. A short time and the escape was down to three riders as the early workload put in by McCauley started to tell and he went back to join the chasing group. The threesome stayed clear through to the finish at St. Arnaud. Roulston was too strong for Yates and Blackgrove, and he took the well-deserved win. The result saw Yates and Blackgrove tied on time with the yellow jersey, which will be worn by Yates for the start of the third stage. Tomorrow's stage from Richmond features Raey Saddle and Stanley Brook hill climbs, and finishes 16 kilometres up the infamous 'Marble Mountain' Takaka Hill. Race 3 the Masters 1/2 class also saw a change in the overall leader. Local Chris Charles (Star & Garter Tasman) had another great ride and took second place in the stage and now leads by 13 seconds from Brad McFarlane (Pegasus). Brian Fowler held onto his leader’s jersey, winning the M3-6 grade, and he now leads Brent Harris by eight seconds with the 2007 tour winner Grant Stirling at 34 seconds in third place. In the women's race Serena Sheridan holds on to a comfortable 33-second lead over Sarah Murdoch (Counties Manukau) with Jeanne Kuhajek in third place at 3'19".
