Odlin, Sheridon take opening wins

The summer sun was blazing hot and the cycling action was even hotter on day one of the 2008 Star & Garter Tour de Vineyards. With a brilliant turnout of riders across all grades and races, the large crowd witnessed some of the best days racing ever seen on the Stewarts Avanti Plus Hope circuit races.
The main event for the day was the main men's category, which featured a lineup of 96 riders from the Senior, U23 and U19 ranks. Three sprints on laps one, two, and three of the 55 kilometre race livened things up with Hayden Godfrey (Subway) winning the first two to take the sprint ace jersey, and Sam Eadie winning the third.
Laps four and five saw Justin Kerr taking the King of the Mountains jersey on a countback, after being tied on five points with James Williamson.
The action really started on lap six when a break of 18 riders, containing many of the top contenders, went clear by 20 seconds. By lap eight of 11, five riders were clear, eventual winner and taking the tour leader's jersey Paul Odlin (Star & Garter Tasman), Gordon McCauley (Full Cycle), Heath Blackgrove (Toyota United) who recovered from a nasty spill to finish third, Jeremy Yates (Subway) and Joseph Cooper (Subway), with the bunch at 1.19.
The women's race saw a powerful ride by local Serena Sheridan (Star & Garter Tasman) who rode clear with Sarah Murdoch from Counties Manukau after the three sprints, all won by Karen Fulton (Star & Garter Tasman). The lead pair increased their lead to over three minutes at the finish, where Serena took an easy win and a 30 second lead.
