Zabel doesn't stop winning

German Erik Zabel (Milram) won the second stage of the Vuelta a la Comunidad Valenciana. The 37 year-old sprinting specialist conquered Italian Mirco Lorenzetto (Lampre) and the Frenchman Samuel Dumoulin (Cofidis) in the 178-kilometre run to Xativa. The leader in the general classification remains Spaniard Iván Gutiérrez (Caisse d'Epargne).
"It was a very hard sprint, because there was a descent before the finish line and the road was quite small," noted the German. "I am very happy about my first win of this season. The team worked well together, above all in the last 20 kilometres when we made the pace."
Gutiérrez was content but a bit tired after the stage. "It's great to be the leader, but it also takes a lot of power. We are a strong team, but it was a difficult day. I would like to defend my leadership until the end of the Vuelta."
How it unfolded

After yesterday's hard stage, the second stage of the Vuelta a la Comunidad Valenciana came up with not less than five mountains of third category. The warm weather, typically for Valencian region where many tourists spend their holidays, fulfilled the expectations; the riders competed under 25°C conditions.
The peloton started very fast, and there were many breakaway attempts during the beginning of the stage. One of the breakaway groups consisted of five riders: Juan José Oroz (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Gustavo César Veloso (Karpin Galicia), Timothy Duggan (Slipstream Chipotle - H30), David De La Fuente (Saunier Duval-Scott) and Manuel Váquez (Contentpolis - Murcia). Váquez, the leader of the mountain classification, was keen on collecting more points to defend his jersey. However, the peloton was not willing to let De La Fuente and Vázquez (third in the general classification) go, and so the two decided "to leave the mates alone" at kilometre 42.3, after the second mountain classification (Alt de Beniganim, which was covered four times).
The trio of Oroz, César and Duggan reached its maximum advance of 4'04" over the peloton that was leaded by the black-clad Caisse d'Epargne members. The time difference decreased slowly, and on the last ascent to the Alt de Beniganim, the trio had only 1'30" ahead of the peloton where attacks were being fired. Timothy Duggan was the first to pass the summit, followed by César and Oroz.

Eight kilometres before the finish, the breakaway group was chased down by the peloton, where the teams of the sprinters worked in the first ranks. The speed was kept high so that no other rider was able to escape, and so the public in Xàtiva saw a mass sprint. Milram's work yielded fruits and Erik Zabel was able to win ahead of Lorenzetto and Dumoulin.
Javier Benitez (Benfica) had high expectations for today's stage: "Xàtiva is my hometown, and I would like to win at home," wished the Spaniard before the stage. His team did everything to realise this dream, but in the end Benitez finished sixth. "This sprint, with people like [Erik] Zabel, [Alessandro] Petacchi, [Danilo] Napolitano, was like a lottery. I accelerated too soon, and mistakes like this are not forgiven in such a strong group."
Tomorrow's stage won't be an easy one; the riders will cover 166.5 kilometres with four mountains, three of second and one of third category. The third of the five-stage race will start and finish in Ibi.
