Impressive time trial victory yields overall win for Posthuma

Dutchman Joost Posthuma won the time trial stage that concluded the Driedaagse De Panne-Koksijde in such an impressive style that he even surprised himself by taking overall victory in the process. The 27 year-old Rabobank rider had 15 bonus seconds on Italian Manuel Quinziato (Liquigas), who finished second, and fell two seconds short of the overall victory. Italian Enrico Gasparotto (Barloworld), who had been leading the race since stage one, finished 12th at 35 seconds, losing the eight seconds needed to preserve the leader's jersey.
Posthuma was taken out of competition last year when a car hit him during a training ride in Holland. The powerful Dutchman has had some strong results in time trials in the past, but his victory in the relatively short time trial today confirms that he has recovered well from the accident. Before the time trial he trailed Gasparotto by 27 seconds, but impressively managed to take it all back.
"This is a very special victory, which I didn't expect anymore. I hoped for the podium as normally 27 seconds is way too much, but I did it nevertheless," a surprised Posthuma noted. "At the first [timed] mark I had a good time and then I took the guy who started ahead of me [Kurt Hovelynck (Topsport Vlaanderen) - ed.]. Then, I powered towards the finish and took it."
He should be able to claim the overall victory in other stage races although his climbing abilities are unknown. "I'm not a specialist in the high mountains, but I can climb for sure. Overall, I'm a very constant rider." Last year's De Panne winner went on to win the Ronde van Vlaanderen, but Posthuma didn't want to say he could repeat that feat. Juan Antonio "Flecha is our sole leader and after him we've got a lot of riders who can be there in the finale. I think we'll see a breakaway lasting very long. It'll be a very strange race."
Before Posthuma hammered passed everyone in the final moments of the race, it was Stijn Devolder (Quick Step) who kept hold of the provisional race lead. The Belgian started as 19th rider, but his time at the finish stayed on top for an hour and a half. Magnus Backstedt (Slipstream Chipotle - H30) powered passed the Belgian, even if halfway through the course Backstedt was still four seconds down on Devolder. At the finish, the Swede threw his bike over the line 58" earlier than the Belgian.
"I heard on the radio that I was really close and I gave everything in that last bit. I think I'm in top form right in time for the big races," Backstedt said. Meanwhile Posthuma took 15" from Backstedt's time and by setting that time it was clear who would win the stage, and possibly the overall victory as well. Afterwards, Quinziato gave all he had, but the Italian fell two seconds too short to claim the overall victory.
Strong man Luca Paolini (Acqua Sapone-Caffč Mokambo) couldn't deploy the necessary time trial skills to pose a threat for the GC and he tumbled down the overall rankings. The classification leader coming into the afternoon stage, Enrico Gasparotto, couldn't overtake Paolini – who started one minute earlier - during his ride and fell short of the eight seconds needed to keep Posthuma from winning the overall in De Panne.
Last year's winner Alessandro Ballan finished 40" down on Posthuma and ended the race ranked seventh in the GC.

- Enrico Gasparotto (Barloworld) gave it a good spin at the warmup, but his face didn't express the desired confidence.
- Tomas Vaitkus (Astana) gave up his number for some happy kids. After the race, of course.
- The podium with Mr. Fast on the right and Mrs Elegant on the left.
- A smiling Joost Posthuma (Rabobank) was happy to exchange his 2007 runner-up spot for the overall victory in 2008.
- Mark Cavendish (High Road) ended up winning the green jersey, thanks to two nice sprint wins.
