Race 3 - May 1: Uptown Greenwood Pro Cycling Challenge,

Candelario due for a win

By Kirsten Robbins in Greenwood, South Carolina

Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast took advantage of having a full team of eight riders to carry sprinter Alex Candelario to the line in a commanding sprint victory ahead of Jonathan Cantwell (Jittery Joes) and Jake Keough (CRCA/Sakonnet Technology).

"We didn't let anything get more than ten seconds up the road," said Kelly Benefit Strategies assistant director Ken Mills. "We had a full team and we were looking for a field sprint and had a full team last night, no team had eight guys there. We wanted representation and to give Candelario the opportunity to sprint."

Attacks set off from the field early on in the pro men's ninety-minute criterium with teams looking for added break away exposure and stage victories. Kelly Benefit used their numbers to hold the field together and keep their winning sprinter feeling fresh for the finale. "Our big thing was to make sure he didn't have to do work because the last couple of nights he had to work a lot," said Mills. "The team did a great job covering attacks."

With fifteen laps to go a break of three riders snuck off the front and gained a maximum of twelve seconds. The green clad team set several riders to lead the peloton in chase that marked the beginning of an early lead out. "Our guys caught it back with four laps to go. We had Martin Gilbert, Keven LaCombe, Johnny Sundt and David Veilleux at the front left and they trashed themselves until the final turn. Candelario came across the line with five bike lengths to the next riders."

Pic continues Speed Week lead

Current US national criterium champion Tina Pic (Colavita/Sutter Home) continued to increase her overall Speed Week lead after capturing her second victory in the downtown Greenwood forty-lap criterium.

"My team-mate did an awesome job and worked so hard at the front of the criterium tonight," said Pic who leads the overall series points ahead of Laura VanGilder and Kelly Benjamin.

Multiple unsuccessful breakaways were reabsorbed into the peloton after teams Aaron's, Vanderkitten, Metro and Juice Plus vied for an opportunity at a stage win against some of the other heavy hitting teams like Colavita/Sutter Home and Cheerwine.

Seeing three laps to go, Cheerwine set up their notorious lead out train for sprinters Laura VanGilder and Kelly Benjamin. However, Pic overtook the pair on the uphill finish to the line.
