17th Memorial Rik van Steenbergen - 1.1Belgium, September 5, 20072006 Results Results Past winners Van Avermaet strongest in AntwerpGreg Van Avermaet (Predictor-Lotto) pulled out a blistering sprint in order to win the Memorial Rik van Steenbergen outside of Antwerp, coming in well ahead of last year's winner Nico Eeckhout (Chocolade Jacques) and Steven De Jongh (Quickstep-Innergetic). The winner came from a group of 15 which broke free of the peloton early in the race including four riders from the Unibet.com team: Baden Cooke, Jeremy Hunt, Pieter Jacobs and Gorik Gardeyn. Even with strength in numbers, the beleaguered team could not pull out a win. Hunt attacked in the finishing circuits, but could not stay clear, while Wouter Weylandt crashed out of the break in the final kilometres. In the end, Van Avermaet was able to get the better of his companions without the benefit of team-mates. The 22 year-old got his first professional victory in the Tour of Qatar in January, but the win on his home soil meant something different. "This is without doubt my most beautiful victory of the season," Van Avermaet told sporza.be. "I kept calm the entire race and jumped with the decisive move. The fall of Weylandt was actually beneficial for me. I went at the right moment. I know that even after a race of 200 km I can still come out of a corner strong."
