Tour du Faso - 2.2Burkina Faso, October 26-November 4, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 9 - November 3: Fada N'Gourma - Zorgho, 110 kmTomasi captures his secondOne had to wait until the penultimate day to witness a large bunch sprint at the end of a stage. All the ingredients fell into place for this type of finish On Stage 9. As the peloton pushed closer to Zorgho it chased down a small group of escapees, while the Alsace team prepared its train to secure another stage victory, but sprinter Mickaël Schnell (Alsace) was slightly too keen to put his arms up in the air and claim the victory, with a photo finish showing his team-mate was actually first across the line. It was finally Julien Tomasi who offered Alsace another victory, his second of the event after his success in Kaya. The Moroccan squad finished the day as expected, with the yellow jersey remaining on Adil Jelloul's shoulders with one stage remaining. The squad also holds the pink jersey, with Mohammed Er Ragragui the new leader in the points standing. How it unfoldedSome thought that the 110 kilometres from Fada N'Gourma to Zorgho would provide a slight rest day after yesterday's tough stage conquered by Adil Jelloul. But again a conqueror's spirit shone through in the Moroccan team, that had decided to go for Vincent Viet's pink jersey - one of the only jerseys not yet on Moroccan shoulders. The man in charge of the mission was Mohammed Er Ragragui, who made a move in a breakaway group of seven riders. Three kilometres later, 30 riders were to enjoy a leading role, including Vincent Viet who was well aware of Morocco's intentions. At the intermediate sprint of Diapangou (kilometre 14), the Essonne rider was to lose his leading place by one point. The pack bunched up again just after the sprint. The fast pace still led by the Morrocan squad started making things tough for many struggling riders. After just under 40 kilometres of racing, only 45 riders remained among the main pack, including all the Alsace and Moroccan men - the holders of the leading jerseys and the first 25 riders overall. For all the others, a gruppetto was organised. Pierre S. Kiba (Sofitex) and Romain Appert (Centre) tried their luck and broke away at kilometre 45. Their attempt only lasted around 30 kilometres until the following intermediate sprint, where a new episode in the battle for pink played out. Viet's reaction allowed him to get back into joint leading position, but 10 kilometres later in Sapaga, Er Ragragui claimed a precious point that gave him the lead again. Immediately after a new breakaway group took off, which included the likes of Mahamadi Sawadogo (Port Autonome De Lome), Abdellatif Karraz (Morocco), Saidou Tall (Burkina Faso), Damien Tekou (Cameroon) and Tomasi. The five men kept hope alive during 20 kilometres they were away, but were caught with eight kilometres left. Several teams then looked as if they'd decided to wait for a bunched sprint to fight it out, especially the Belgium and Alsace squads. Tomasi went back to work with the ambition to help out Mickaël Schnell in his green jersey defence. On the finish line, the Alsace riders slightly anticipated their joy without knowing if Lionel Syne's last minute effort would be good enough. But the photo-finish said it all - by just an inch Tomasi claimed the stage. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Amaury Sport Organisation
