Tour du Faso - 2.2Burkina Faso, October 26-November 4, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - October 30: Pâ - Bobo-Dioulasso, 130 kmGraczyk shows the wayThe road heading to Bobo-Dioulasso was rich in lessons when concerning the conquest of the yellow jersey held by Moroccan Mouhssine Lahsaini since the end of Stage 1. The Netherlands team confirmed that by taking care of the day's chase they had the firm intention of managing a hold-up in a close future for their leader Roel Egelmeers, still just a few seconds adrift. But most of all Morocco showed some slight weaknesses in their defence system. At the end of the stage, an attack allowed Jérémy Galland to operate a precious move in the overall standings and become one of the contenders for final victory. Vincent Graczyk (Centre), the smartest and the most powerful in the final sprint, is also a member of the contender's club thanks to his stage success. The leading five overall are now within 1.03 minutes, with five stages remaining. How it unfoldedThe atmosphere was rather cool at the start and during the first few kilometres of the stage which saw a group of four riders rapidly authorised to take off the front. Adil Jelloul (Morocco), Pierre S. Kiba (Sofitex), Bolodigui Ouattara (Ivory Coast) and Olivier Derquenne (Essonne) were to be caught by Houdo Sawadogo (Bur), Guy Smet (Belgium) and Alexandre Brandt (Alsace), who started feeling that the atmosphere was perfect for a long break. At kilometre 10, Julien Tomasi (Alsace), and then Mahamadi Sawadogo (Port Autonome De Lome), also expressed themselves, but unfortunately waited too long to make the good move, leaving them back in the pack at 1.50 minutes. The Moroccans, used to taking care of the fast pace at the front of the pack, this time decided not to chase. Their team-mate Jelloul, who could well be considered as a potential successor to Lahsaini in yellow, was indeed representing the Atlas at the front. The riders, especially the Europeans, started suffering the effects of four days of a very demanding race from a physical point of view and failed to uphold a decent chase. At kilometre 30, the seven front men could enjoy a lead of 3.40 minutes over the pack. That was the moment chosen by the Dutch team to realise their morning mistake - none of their riders were indeed in the leading group. To maintain Roel Egelmeers' position overall (second at five seconds), they were therefore forced to take command of the pack and lead the chase to reduce the gap. A mission perfectly dealt with as the advantage of the escapees dropped down to 1.10 minutes by kilometre 100. Aware of the Dutch move, Jelloul decided to attack on several occasions, quickly imitated by Smet. Ouattara also enjoyed a short break without consequence, but the pace of the pack and of his chasers rapidly brought him to stop his effort. He was to be caught with five kilometres to go. The pressure started becoming tougher and tougher for the leading men who then only had a 30 second lead with 25 kilometres to go. Jelloul, Smet and Derquenne, managed to break away from their former companions. They however couldnt do much against a small group of counter-attackers that took off with 16 kilometres to go. As the finish moved closer and closer, the pace eased up. With five kilometres to go only eight riders could still consider victory, Jelloul and Smet being the last two members of the earlier break. In the front quintet, Sadrack Teguimaha (Cameroon) made his presents known. At his third attempt he managed to take off and have a 50 metre lead. The distance almost looked decent enough as he made it to the last kilometre mark on his own. But behind, the sprinters return was fatal. He was caught with a hundred metres to go while the final battle was won by Frenchman Graczyk. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Amaury Sport Organisation
