Vuelta a Chihuahua Internacional - 2.2Mexico, October 7-14, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - October 9: Parral - Guachochi, 198 kmLópez delivers second win for Canels TurboBy Monika Prell in Guachochi Mexican Carlos López (Team Canels Turbo) won today's third and queen stage of the Tour into Guachochi and in doing so secured the second win of the Tour for his team, Canels Turbo. Gregorio Ladino (Team Tecos) has moved into the overall lead after placing second on the stage, Frenchman Nicolas Vogondy (Agritubel) crossed the line in third. El Parral, a silver-mining town in the Sierra Tarahumara, played host to the riders before they set off on their 198km journey to Guachochi. Brightly dressed women accompanied by men in sombreros and their playful children waved the riders off, as they headed towards an area of Mexico where the inhabitants are still living a simple life. The stage profile and long distance as well as the many tough stages still to come, seemed to be the last thing on the riders minds today as they set off. As soon as the flag dropped Arquimides Lam (Canels Turbo) attacked the peloton hoping that the peloton would let him go on what could only be considered a suicide break. Yet other teams in the peloton also had itchy feet and were reluctant to let him go. Once he was brought back into the fold a barrage of attacks, lead mainly by the Mexican contingent in the race, but also by Óscar Sevilla (Relax GAM) as well as the Slipstream and Kelly Benefit teams were unleashed on the peloton. All the attacking coupled with the constant ascent took its toll early, with the peloton splitting into many smaller groups early in the stage. Many of these groups would struggle to reach the finish before the time limit, with many riders forced to abandon. The Ceramica Flaminia team was worst hit, with half their riders failing to finish due to the intense pace and a gastro bug that swept through the team overnight. An intermediate sprint just after the 100km mark served as a spring board for four riders, Adrián Palomares, Antonio Aldape, Tomasz Marczynski and Óscar Sevilla, to escape the leading group of 30 riders, however they were not allowed a gap by the chasing riders and were brought back into the fold shortly after they escaped. After 127km of racing Carlos López (Canels Turbo) and Gregorio Ladino (Tecos) broke clear of the lead group, and profited from the confusion in the chasing pack as to whom should take up the chase to gain a substantial lead. With just nine kilometers remaining López attacked his break away companion to take the stage solo in a time of 5:39.35. Ladino was able to hang on for second and in doing so, took over the overall lead from overnight leaer Danny Pate (Slipstream). Lopez was clearly happy with his win after the stage, stating just how hard the conditions are to race in. "It was a hard stage because of the altitude of the mountains. The race is at a very high level and the best one in Latin America, with very strong teams." Lopez rode a very determined race which meant there was very little time to enjoy the beautiful scenery typical to this part of the world. "It was a pity that I couldn't enjoy the beautiful landscape, I was very focused, but it was a great experience and the adrenaline was at its highest level. I dedicate this victory to my family and to my team, because both have always supported me," he said. After taking their second stage in as many days, Team Canels Turbo are looking forward to the remainder of the Tour and hope to be in the fight for the overall. "For the upcoming stages we are well prepared and we are really keen on struggling for the best ranks." Lopez said. Canadian, Christian Meier (Team Symmetrics Cycling) rode well today and was able to hold onto the jersey of leading under 23 rider, "It was a hard stage today with a lot of strong teams participating. I am happy about the jersey, now I am looking for a good general classification and I hope that I did not spent too many energy," he said. Portuguese rider, Filipe Cardoso (Liberty Seguros), who was been very active since the beginning of the Tour, was surprised but happy about his performance today. "It is a difficult race for me, I am not in my best form. Before travelling to Mexico I was already on holidays, but I am content that I can conserve the jersey [of the most combative rider]. Now I would like to win a stage." New overall leader, Colombian, Gregorio Ladino, is happy to be leading, but realizes that the finish is still a long way away. "Today was a quite difficult stage because of the terrain and the altitude. I went very well. Now we have three difficult stages, and until we reach the last kilometre of the last stage the leadership isn't secure," he stated.
