The final stage of the 2007 Tri Peaks Challenge saw a battle between Jelly Belly's Andrew Bajadali and Toyota-United's Chris Baldwin up the infamous three-mile Mt Nebo climb. A well orchestrated team effort by Toyota-United was not enough to hold back defending champion Bajadeli who not only won the stage but the overall race. "I just wanted the stage win actually," Bajadali admitted. "I was 20 seconds back before the stage but with my time bonus I ended up winning the whole race!"

Bajadali snatched the overall victory from Baldwin, who finished second on general classification, with Team Rubicon's Aaron Tuckerman taking third.

The stage started with Health Net's Karl Menzies in the leader's jersey after the previous day's five-mile time trial. The team displayed its strength in the time trial after it swept the podium with John Murphy, Rory Southerland and Menzies.

The green team took control of today's final stage early over the first climbs. Only one break was successful in gaining time on the field, it included the Jelly Belly duo of Nick Reistad and Bryce Mead. The break took ample pressure off of the squad's climber, Bajadali, while Health Net took the responsibility to close the gap before the climb.

"The day went really well for us tactically," Bajadali said. "We sat back and let Toyota and Health Net's battle take place because it was so close on GC."

Though Menzies was the virtual leader before the climb, Bajadali was not concerned with marking him. "Toyota was worried that they [Health Net] would take the time bonuses away and worried about Menzies on the climb," Bajadali said. "But I didn't see Menzies [as] a factor in the climb. He is a good all-rounder but not on a climb like this, given his size."

Jelly Belly, Toyota-United and Health Net rallied their riders at the front of the field to position their respective climbers. No team did it like Toyota-United, who used every ounce of strength in the first parts of the climb to keep Baldwin as fresh as possible. "The climb was really steep and we had a good plan and stuck too it," Baldwin said proudly. "The guys controlled it going into the climb to keep me in position and Stevic rode as long as he could starting at the bottom of the climb."

The front group dwindled quickly into a group of five climbing specialists that included Tuckerman, Javier Zapata (Ciaco), Justin England (Toyota-Untied), Baldwin and Bajadali. Bajadali found the opportunity to attack Baldwin on the steeper sections midway up the climb. Baldwin's teammate, Justin England, helped him stay as close to Bajadali as possible to limit the time gap before the end. "Andy was superior today and he had nothing like the support I had," Baldwin said.

"A climb like that favors my ability in terms of strength to weight ratio," Bajadali explained. "I got a gap and they held me pretty good and with one kilometre to go I went all out to gain more time."

Bajadali added: "I want to congratulate my teammates and our staff and the other teams too. We all did our part in the race this week."

Hold takes Mt Nebo; Rais wins the overall

In the women's race a break of five riders held off the charging climbers all the way to the top of Mt Nebo as Betina Hold (Cheerwine) nipped former US national champion Katheryn Curi (Webcor Builders) for victory at the line, closely followed by Tiffany Cromwell (Colavita/Sutter Home). Webcor's Amber Rais climbed in behind the break away in enough time to secure the general classification win.

"We have such faith in one another and trust each other to do what needs to be done," Rais said of her squad. "We were certainly out numbered but either of us would have been dangerous on the GC and that's what gave us the advantage. We are all willing to sacrifice for one another - we are three smart, strong and experienced riders."

The 55 mile race started with a flurry of attacks initiated by Team Menikini. When it looked like things were about to settle down, the previous day's criterium winner, Rochelle Gilmore, took her turn that created a split in the field that was never reunited. The winning break away included Gilmore, Hold, Curi, Cromwell, Heather Spors (Arizona University), and Jane Ziergler (Velo-Bella).

Both Spors and Ziergler drove the break until it had gained a significant time gap over the main bunch, which results in a two and a half minute lead by the climb's base. Webcor, Cheerwine and Colavita/Sutter Home had no incentive to help work in the break because their general classification riders remained back in the field. Cheerwine organized itself out front to set the pace and ensure Chrissy Ruiter would maintain her second place overall.

"We had complete faith in Katheryn to do what she needed to do on the climb. I had a good cushion of time," Rais said. "I only had to make up 45 seconds to maintain the lead. We knew the climb would be hard but we wouldn't lose time."

The break splintered over the climb, with Hold and Curi gaining time on the others. Cromwell was the last rider not to get caught by Canadian National Champion Alex Wrubleski (Colavita/Sutter Home) who burst out of the small chase group with 200 meters to go. "Our team set tempo to keep the time gap manageable to make sure Chrissy was still on the podium," Cheerwine's Leigh Hobson said. "Brook, Chrissy and I lead up the climb until the flatter section toward the top."

While Rais claimed the overall victory, having won three of the five stages, Cheerwine was pleased with securing Chrissy Ruiter's second place and Hold's stage victory which moved her into third place overall on the final classification.
