Tour de Perth - NEPerth, Australia, May 26-27, 2007Race Report Stuart Shaw (Drapac Porche) and Kathy Watt (Kathy Watt Racing Team) have taken out the Open Men's and Women's overall titles at the 2007 Tour de Perth. In an exciting finale to the Men's event, Shaw was able to wrest the leader's jersey from young Queenslander, Jack Anderson, in the final criterium around the streets of Kalamunda as inclement weather shortened the stage to 30 minutes. In contrast, 1992 Olympic Road Race Champion, Watt, was dominant from the opening time trial stage and won all four stages on her way to her second title. Open Men The weather might not have been favourable, but that didn't stop WA's World Junior Champion, Travis Meyer, from blitzing the field in the opening 4.5km uphill time trial stage. Seventeen-year-old Meyer, representing the strong Drapac Porche Team, recorded a time of 7:26 to take the initial leaders jersey from fellow WA riders, Hilton McMurdo and Peter Dawson. This set the scene for an enthralling battle around the testing Pickering Brook circuit that comprised the 104km second stage. The field was reduced to a select group of a dozen riders on the final climb to the Kalamunda finish with Olympic Track Champion, Peter Dawson, winning the final sprint from Stuart Shaw (Drapac Porche) and Meyer. Meyer was able to retain the overall leader's jersey with Dawson moving into second place over McMurdo. The third stage saw riders take on two laps of the scenic Mundaring Weir course and a breakaway of five riders changed the complexion of the race. Included in the break were Shaw, Jack Anderson (Ord Minnett Elite Racing Team) and emerging WA talent, 18-year-old Ben King (Cyclemania). Shaw eventually won the stage with Anderson taking over the race lead by 6 seconds from Shaw with King 19 seconds back in third. With the weather threatening, Shaw seized a vital opportunity to gain back the race lead for Drapac Porche when he broke away with two other riders in the early stages of the final criterium. Despite the efforts of Anderson and his Ord Minute team, the break maintained a gap of 15 seconds as the rain set in. As the conditions became slippery, the Chief Commissaries rang the final bell to indicate a lap to go. Grant Irwin (Ord Minnett Elite Racing Team) sprinted to victory for the stage with Shaw doing enough to claim the Tour victory. Anderson was a gallant second overall while King completed the podium. Western Australian riders, Meyer and McMurdo, were forth and fifth respectively. Craig McCartney (Savings and Loans) won the King of the Mountain classification with Anderson taking out the Under 23 classification. Open Women Kathy Watt (Vic) set the tone for the weekend when she scorched to victory in the opening time trial. Junior World Championship representative, Josie Tomic (WA) was 13 seconds back in second with former World Junior Champion, Amanda Spratt (NSW) another 12 seconds back in third. Watt continued to dominate the final sprints to the line winning the second and third stages from Tomic and finishing the Tour in fine style by taking the final criterium again from Tomic with Peta Mullens(Vic) finishing third. Watt led from start to finish claiming the general classification from Tomic with Spratt in third. Josie Tomic claimed both the Queen of the Mountains jersey and the Under 23 classification.
