Mount Hood Classic - NEUSA, May 29-June 3, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 6 - June 3: Downtown Hood River Criterium, 1 hourO'Neill and Goldstein best again at Mt. HoodBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor
Toyota-United one-two in critIt may have only been five seconds, but that lead was enough to secure another overall victory for Nathan O'Neill (Health Net-Maxxis) at the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic. O'Neill finished in the same leading group as second place overall Phil Zajicek (Navigators Insurance), with Toyota-United's Health Blackgrove and Bobby Lea winning the stage in one-two style. "Health Net came to the front to try and set up Ryder Hesjedal," said Blackgrove, who in turn was trying to set-up teammate Lea. "I took the last four corners and just bombed through those as hard as I could. I didn't want to lead Bobby out too early because it was an uphill sprint and into the wind." "Once I got through the final corner, I just kept waiting for them to come around me and no one did," Blackgrove said. "Fortunately, Bobby used some of his track skills to drift a few guys off his wheel and I had the legs to keep going." "We closed the deal," said O'Neill. "Zajicek took a few swings at us, but swing and a miss," he said jokingly. "Really, he and his team threw down pretty hard, with repeated accelerations, but we kept our cool. I followed him the first few times, but then I let my team cover his moves. That took the sting out of him, and it was a roaring uphill headwind in the finishing straight." O'Neill is continuing to ride well this year, after getting a later start than usual. He is hoping that he can continue this form and turn it into something special later in the season, including the world championships. "As long as I am healthy I hope to be strong again for Nature Valley, and be strong in the later part of the season that I have never been strong for before. " Carroll takes another for Aaron'sAlso repeating an overall victory was Leah Goldstein (Symmetrics), but even more impressive than doing it for the third time in a row is that she did it this week with only one teammate, Marni Hambleton. "I'm surprised, because it is getting harder every year," Goldstein told Cyclingnews. I had one teammate the whole week. She killed herself in the beginning this week." "I wasn't too worried about today," Goldstein said about the crit, with her minute-and-a-half lead. "I was more worried about yesterday. I knew I was going to have to cover a lot on my own. I had never ridden so hard in my life! I literally collapsed across the line. With five kilometres to go I had nothing left, so I just kept Gomez in sight." Felicia Gomez (Aaron's Pro Cycling) ended up second overall, but her fast teammate, Katharine Carroll, finished first on the day - beating former race leader Katie Mactier (ValueAct Capital) in a two-up sprint from a breakaway. "With us only being a minute down on GC we wanted to try and get Felicia off, but the only person Leah had to watch in the crit was Felicia," said Carroll about the team's strategy. So Carroll went on the offensive to get a stage win, and Mactier was the only one strong enough to go with her, bridging up after three solo laps. "Our gap got up to 55 seconds at one point, and then back down to 20. By the time we finished we were seeing the tail end of the group. " "I knew I was going to have to go early - she is pretty experienced, and waiting to the last corner wouldn't suit me," Carroll said. "I went with two to go and she caught me and stopped working at that point. On the back side, with the turns, I punched it to get a little bit of a gap onto the home stretch and held it."
