Mount Hood Classic - NEUSA, May 29-June 3, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - June 2: Wy'East Road Race, 87 milesLill, Gomez win penultimate Mt. Hood stageBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor Health Net-Maxxis takes O'Neill to Mt. Hood win
"The guys did an awesome job today, right from the start," said O'Neill. "They did everything that was asked of them today. Navigators threw everything at us today. [The team] won the stage." Actually, Darren Lill (Navigators Insurance) won the stage, but the metaphor was clear. Like yesterday, the defense of the jersey did not come easy. But unlike the previous stage's time trial, O'Neill had his entire team to help him keep tabs on the biggest threat: Phil Zajicek (Navigators Insurance), who was only five seconds behind O'Neill. "The break got four minutes and that was a little bit too much, so we upped the tempo and it started coming back," O'Neill said. "[Navigators] had a couple of guys up there, but we still had to watch him, it was like there were two races going on. We had to focus on keeping the break in check and then the focus shifted to him to the finish." "The boys rode awesome - three guys in the break and Chadwick put in some accelerations on the climb," said Zajicek. "I must have attacked sixteen times. I accelerated and [O'Neill] matched it. That finishing climb was not conducive for someone like me - it wasn't very steep and it was a headwind. He was just too strong." Even though it was only a five second deficit to O'Neill, yesterday's impressive time trial effort took a little out of Zajicek, making those five seconds seem much bigger. "I was feeling it for sure," he said. But ever the team player, Zajicek was happy with teammate Lill's stage win and is still looking at racing full-on tomorrow. "Any time you win a bike race it's great. But it's tough when you are so close - just five seconds." And as any bike racer knows, it is not over until you cross the finish line. "We'll still throw it at him tomorrow!" said Zajicek. Goldstein fends off Aaron's attacksSimilar to the men's race, the women's leader, Leah Goldstein (Symmetrics), had a tough task defending her jersey - especially considering she was relatively isolated on climbs in earlier stages. However, working in her favour was a much larger time advantage, nearly a minute-and-a-half. Still, the entire Aaron's team was riding with one goal today - knocking Goldstein off the top spot. It did not work. Goldstein responded to every attack, staying with the leaders all day and even going with a breakaway that ended up sticking to the end, finishing second on the day in between two Aaron's riders, with Felcia Gomez in front and Kristen Sanders behind. "We attacked from the start, on the first climb," said Gomez. "Leah pretty much went with everything. We threw a lot at her and she stayed with us. We ended up with me, Kristen and Leah. Leah said she would work with us and we figured we needed to get some distance between us and the group." "With five kilometres to go Kristen attacked to put Leah in trouble," said Gomez, who had earned enough points on the day for the final QOM jersey. "Leah covered, and I countered and took the win, but not enough to take the lead." The two-time defending champion takes her lead of more than a minute into the final criterium stage of the race, looking comfortable for the overall title again. But Aaron's is still strategizing for a win. "It isn't over and we're going to still ride for everything tomorrow," said Gomez.
