Mount Hood Classic - NEUSA, May 29-June 3, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - May 30: Columbia Hills Road Race, 112/84 milesJacques-Maynes and Mactier win stage and Mt. Hood leadBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor
O'Neill starts in lead, Jacques-Maynes finishes with itYesterday's opening prologue seemed to be too good to be true, and it turned out to be just that. A shocking win by an amateur over some major domestic professional time trial specialists was revealed to be an error in time calculation by the officials. Thus, Health Net-Maxxis' Nathan O'Neill was give the race leader's jersey to wear in today's opening road stage. But that was short lived today, with yesterday's third place Ben Jacques-Maynes (Priority Health) taking out the downhill sprint finish along with the time bonus on the line to put him in the jersey. Phil Zajicek (Navigators Insurance) and Jeff Louder (Health Net-Maxxis) rounded out the top three. "I wasn't really planning on trying to win the stage," Jacques-Maynes told Cyclingnews. "But everyone kept pointing out there is a lack of sprinters in the field. Every time someone came up and told me it gave me a boost in confidence. In the finish people were actually fighting for my wheel! With people wanting my wheel it gave me good position, and it turned into a self-fulfilling prophecy in a way. It was definitely a strange experience for me." The time bonus on the line gave Jacques-Maynes a four second lead on O'Neill, which means he will be on the defensive tomorrow. "We should be able to control for the stage tomorrow," he said. "We'll see what happens in the TT on Friday but it looks like O'Neill showed everyone [yesterday] he is the one to beat. I'll try to limit my losses on that." But with strong performances in recent races, the Health Net team will have to keep a watchful eye on him tomorrow. "I think my climbing is good - I was sixth at Joe Martin." O'Neill was hardly worried about relinquishing the duties of defending the race lead, at least for a few days. "We basically just played the game today," he said. "We kinda wanted to give it up today anyways. The guys rode pretty well to bring that break back. Now Priority Health has the lead. They have a good chance at controlling it, and our guys will get a little breather." Regarding the change in the prologue results, O'Neill was happy that things were set straight. "It was just the right thing to do," he said. "The California Giant director came up to us just as we were pulling in this morning and said we need to rectify things. He and [Devon Vigus] were really cool about it all." An early break of three got up to 15 minutes on the road, but without any dangerous names among the three, Health Net-Maxxis was easily able to bring it down to two minutes with fifteen miles left in the race, and the rest of the field worked to finish them off to set-up a field sprint. Jacques-Maynes said that he is here as a final tune-up for Philly-week, specifically the Reading race with the course change to increase the amount of climbing. However, as a professional, having the race lead means training will take a back seat for the moment. "I am looking at this race as a form boost for Philly week, but when you have the race lead you can't ignore that."
Mactier makes it two in a rowKatie Mactier (ValueAct Capital Cycling Team) proved that she will be the woman to beat in this year's race, out sprinting nearly the entire field to win the first road stage. "It was a long stage but it was only aggressive at the QOM [Queen of the Mountains] which made it a little hard for us," said Mactier. "We were keen to keep it together and the girls did terrific. They kept it under control . Coming into the sprint it was a sea of red and blue with Aaron's on the front but the girls were still able to deliver me to the line." The Aaron's team was obviously working for their sprinter Kat Carroll who was sitting third overall, just four seconds behind Mactier. "I was going for the sprint win and the time bonus to be in the leader's jersey," said Carroll. But the combination of a downhill finish and the slow speeds on the day made the sprinting much more difficult. "It was a downhill finish and it was a slow day, so everybody was a sprinter!" Also working in Mactier's favour was some insider information, relayed to her by her significant other, Greg Henderson, who won this stage last year. "I think I was lucky because my partner Greg Henderson was here last year and he gave me the low down on the sprint finish," said Mactier. "But [Carroll] is very fast and she will be the one we are looking for." PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Kurt Jambretz/www.actionimages.cc
