Joe Martin Stage Race - NEFayetteville, Arkansas, USA, May 11-13, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Next Stage Stage 1 - May 11: Road race, 178/103 km (M/W)Toyota-United's one-two; Carroll on fireBy Kirsten Robbins The 2007 Joe Martin Stage Race was jump started with an early break that gained a maximum of 11 minutes on the peloton. But even 11 minutes wasn't enough to hold back the dominant teams on the hunt for a sprint finish. Toyota-United's 'Cuban missile' Ivan Dominguez and his teammate, Serbian national champion Ivan Stevic, tag teamed the field sprint claiming the top two spots while Jelly Belly's Alex Candelario flew in for third. The remarkable 11-minute breakaway included Priority Health sprinter Emile Abraham, Team HART's Wes Hartman and Mercy Cycling's Stefan Rothe. The trio followed a series of attacks that resulted in their separation from the peloton during the first 20 kilometres of the 178 kilometre road race. The race progressed over the infamous 12 kilometre climb up to Mt. Gaylor where Abraham's breakaway companions slowly fell off the pace. Back in the peloton, the teams with the strongest number of players were Toyota-United, Health Net and Jelly Belly who became worried that the gap was too large. They each sent two riders to the front and combined forces to drag back the break. Stage winner Ivan Dominguez explained his team's strategy of leaving the escapees out there as long as possible. "Eighty kilometres to the finish we put two guys on the front with Health Net and Jelly Belly to keep the speed high and the pressure on," said Dominguez. "We started rotating to try to bring them back but we didn't want to bring them back completely too fast because we were afraid teams would start attacking us." Slowly the peloton reduced the gap and engulfed the breakaway riders one by one until just Abraham remained out front alone with five kilometres to go. At this point the sprinters' teams began to set up their lead outs from the main highway 71 and funnelled into the narrow roads towards the line. "It was our plan to set up Dominguez while Stevic had a free role in the final," said Toyota-United directeur sportif Harm Jansen. "The whole team did a lot of work at the end." It was a race to the corner where Jelly Belly, Health Net and Toyota-United were all in good position. Dominguez and Stevic capitalised when Health Net's strongman Karl Menzies initiated the sprint. "I was behind Stevic through the last corner and Menzies jumped into first position," Dominguez said. "Menzies went and did almost a lead out for us. It was a slow sprint because it is up hill and a long sprint." Aaron's ace chalks up another winIn the women's race Aaron's rider Katharine Carroll came through victorious over Cheerwine's Laura Van Gilder and Leigh Hobson in a bunch finish. "I think winning is contagious because I think once you do it once you know you can do it again," said the Aaron's team leader. The women faced 103 kilometres ending on the same course as the men's event where aggression from the start thinned the field from 90 to 50 riders before the base of the 12 kilometre climb of Mt. Gaylor. Team TargetTraining's directeur sportif Greg Wolfe acknowledged the strength of the women's field after he witnessed stage one from the caravan. "The field was strong today and there is a lot of possibility with the women's teams," Wolfe said. "I'm excited to be here and to participate in the growth of women's racing." One notable rider developing in the women's peloton was Elodie Touffett from the Canadian based team Minikini. The young rider attacked a break of 15 that made it over the climb together. Touffett gained a maximum of two minutes on the peloton while the large break was quickly reabsorbed. Race winner Carroll commented on the French-Canadian's efforts and the possible threat she posed to the more established teams. "Minikini had a rider attack the last mile and half of the climb," remembered Carroll. "No one was familiar with her so we all let her go. Once her gap grew to two minutes we started working to bring it back because we realised she was a strong rider who has raced well in the World Cup." Touffett soloed for a further 32 kilometres and similar to the men's race was swarmed by the lead out trains with five kilometres to go. Webcor, Cheerwine and Aaron's displayed their dominance in the field sprint but Carroll also remembered the finish from previous years, which, combined with her top notch fitness and recent victory at the Athens Twilight criterium, made for a somewhat expected win. "Our team raced great and Sarah Caravella led me through the last corner. We learned so much at the Southeast Crit Series in terms of positioning that it really played out well at the end of today's race," said Carroll. Even though the pressure was turned on in the last kilometre, it was also important to conserve a little energy because of three short steep hills before the last corner. Third placed rider from Cheerwine Leigh Hobson commented on her team's strategy in the finale. "We were all up there to help with the lead out and Laura [Van Gilder] was so close to winning but Katharine Carroll came around her in a swoosh," Hobson said. "This is my first leaders jersey," said Carroll. "Getting the victory at twilight give me so much confidence. Once we were all together coming into town I knew I had a good feeling that I could win the race." PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Kurt Jambretz/Action Images
