Tour of the Gila - NEUSA, May 2-7, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 5 - May 6: Gila Monster Road Race, 105.7 (71.8) milesAbbott and O'Neill ride to Gila winsBy Mark Zalewski
Moninger tames Gila monsterScott Moninger (BMC) showed that he is still on top form in his sixteenth year as a professional, tackling the 9,000 plus feet of climbing in the final stage of the Tour of the Gila. Health Net-Maxxis' Nathan O'Neill and his teammates successfully defended their lead on the general classification, giving O'Neill his first stage race win of the year. "The guys were phemonal!" O'Neill told Cyclingnews after the stage. "Everyone was attacking when we got to the turnaround. But Jeff [Louder] and Ryder [Hesjedal] rode tough through there. Ryder was a machine today, riding just about the entire last 35 kilometres on the front. Without him I don't want to think how it would have turned out." The main breakaway of the day did not have any GC threats in it, allowing the Health Net team to relax for a little while before reeling them in with assistance from the brutal parcours. "There was a break of like ten, but then it widdled down to six then four then three," said O'Neill. "We caught them on the second to last climb." That climb further thinned out the field, leaving only a select group composed of climbers like Andy Bajadali (Jelly Belly), Anthony Colby (Colavita-Sutter Home), Chris Baldwin (Toyota-United), Scott Mominger (BMC), Tom Peterson (Slipstream-Chipotle), Hernan Muņoz (P&S-Halcones) along with Hesjedal and O'Neill. But the climbing was not finished, with a small category four climb leading into the finish town of Pinos Altos. "Bajadali had a crack of it on the last climb but he only got 20 seconds at the most," O'Neill said. "Colby and Peterson got a small little gap then. Ryder was blown so I took over but it was only about three kilometres to the end. I just led it out until 500 metres to go which was more than enough to keep my two minutes. Moninger actually gapped Munoz for the win!" "The victory belongs to the whole team," added O'Neill. "They are the reason it came back together for me. I'm happy because it's only my second race back. But it's still a long season to come." Tibco controls final stageFor a change the wind did not feature too strongly but the temperature dropped dramatically in the last stage of the Tour of the Gila. In the women's race Webcor sat at the front of the peloton for the first eight of the 73 mile Stage 5 as the riders cruised to the base of the final stage's first climb. Heading into the first climb three Tibco riders attacked off the front, taking a Colavita/Sutter Home rider, two from Cheerwine, Meshy Holt (Team expresscopy.com) and a Webcor rider with them. With Tibco working on the front the break gained three minutes on the peloton, changing the overall general classification rankings and placing the GC leaders in the break. The change in GC rankings encouraged Webcor and Colavita to move to the front of the peloton and start working to reduce the breaks lead to a controllable time. Back in the break, Tibco was still pulling and engineered a break for Marisa Asplund, who disappeared on the hill and went on the to win the stage two minutes up on second place. Brooke Ourada (Cheerwine) upped the pace in the break in an attempt to increase the distance between the peloton and move up in the GC, but the hard work tired the rider and she placed fifth. In second place was Amber Rais (Webcor) followed by Melissa Holt (Team expresscopy.com) in third and Sarah Tillotson (Colavita/Sutter Home) taking fourth position.
