Tour of the Gila - NEUSA, May 2-7, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - May 4: Inner Loop Road Race, 80.78 milesO'Neill tightens overall lead, Bausch repeats stage winPeterson survives with stage winA small breakaway managed to get away late in the stage today, but it was not much of a threat to overall leader Nathan O'Neill (Health Net-Maxxis). Still, the leader's strong team did not want to take any chances and wanted to put some riders in their place, chasing down the break to within just five seconds on the line. On said line it was Tom Peterson (Slipstream-Chipotle) powering enough to take the win ahead of Nick Reistad (Jelly Belly), Ivan Stevic (Toyota-United) and David Salomon (P&S-Halcones). "The Slipstream guys put their head down on the front of the first climb and it trimmed a lot off the rest of the group," said O'Neill. "Then our little remaining group bombed down the descent on the other side with the main group about thirty seconds back. [My team] thought about bringing it back together to be easier, so I stopped for a nature break, but Stevic and Peterson attacked on one of the small rollers." In reaction to this the Health Net team took the reigns of the peloton and drove the rest of the way. "I haven't had to hit the wind much with the team, the team has been great," O'Neill said. "The guys went ahead and just rode, stayed out of trouble with the crosswinds in the final bit, and we almost caught them on the line." Tomorrow's stage is a criterium which should be more of a rest day for O'Neill before facing the final climbing stage. "We'll get through the crit and then think about the Gila Monster. But we are in pretty good shape - it would take something catastrophic to happen." Bausch repeats win, Webcor sitting pretty with top twoA bit of deja vu happened in the women's race, with Dotsie Bausch (Colavita-Sutter Home) taking out the field sprint ahead of England's Rachel Heal (Webcor.) But the difference is Heal and her teammate Mara Abbot are sitting one-two on the overall classification, with Bausch third by more than a minute and twenty-five seconds, respectively. "It was almost a carbon copy of last year's finish!" said Heal. "There were a couple of sharp turns in the finish. Expresscopy was trying to set it up for Gina Grain I think. We shot a couple of riders off the front to confuse everybody and it kinda worked. Dotsie took a flyer with 500 meters and she got a gap - she won here last year and knew what she was doing."
How it unfoldedThe first climb was followed by an extremely technical descent that saw seven riders from Webcor, Colavita-Sutter Home, Expresscopy.com, Cheerwine and Tibco succeed in the first breakaway. The major contenders were all represented and they gained a minute lead on the peleton. "When I saw the pink leader jersey was missing I really wanted to push the pace," said fourth overall Anne Samplonius (Expresscopy.com). Without race leader Dotsie Bausch among them, Webcor refused to work and attempted to disrupt the break. The top three in the GC eventually caught the leaders and three riders, one each from Colavita, Tibco and Webcor, launched an immediate attack. The last 12 miles was fast and action packed with attack after attack being launched, hampered by long climbs and a strong headwinds. With 400 meters to go in an uphill finish Bausch made an unexpected jump off the front taking Rachel Heal (Webcor) with her. Gina Grain tried to close after the surprise move but Bausch knew when to sprint, taking first place ahead of Heal, Grain and Samplonius. Madeline Holt contributed to this report.
